help with folder/files permissions

#1 Post by dorin » Thu Jun 14, 2007 8:10 pm

hi there,

so, situation is like this, i have a dual boot (win xp and another xp on the ultrabase -same license  ), but whenever i save files when booting from ultrabase's xp when i boot from x40's hdd (when travelling) i cannot access any files i saved when using ultrabay's xp. needless to say the frustration when i got files from work to use them in the weekend....
any ideas how to make them visuables on both xp's? i remember some time ago i had the option of folder permissions, but i can't find that option anymore. i wouldn;t like to use the sharing option (the only cure find till now)

thanks,

dorin

I believe to get the security tab on the folder properties menu, you need to disable simple file sharing. To do that open the Folder Options from the control panel, click the view tab and scroll all the way to the bottom where is says "use simple file sharing). Now you will able to control folder permissions under an admin account in Windows.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

You access the Security tab for permissions and access in Windows SAFE MODE.

A simpler way is to save the files to a FAT32 partition. That way the NTFS permissions are stripped from them. This partition can be on the hard drive or a USB key, or something similar. If you save to a CD, the files are marked Read Only, so that also can present a problem.

a way to stop this from happening is very easy. when you set up a password on your computer, it has the option to make your files private or not, if you click no, then you wont have that problem.

i had that issue when i fixed a friends computer.
