Normally, Rescue and Recovery saves the backups to a hidden folder on your C: drive (Windows partition). You can see this folder if you boot up in SAFE MODE and look for C:\rrbackups.

The hidden partition is not designed for backups. It is designed to keep a copy of the original Factory Contents so that you can restore your ThinkPad to the original factory state. If this does not matter to you and you do not mind losing this feature, go into the BIOS and disable the hidden partition. I also think you might have to modify the Windows registry as well, to remove the filter driver so that Windows can see it.

Here. After installing this, run thinkvantage system update, it will upgrade R n R to the latest version.

Ah, downloaded the file, run it, setup begins and then I get this message:

Error 25011. A file required to install the Rescue and Recovery enviroment could not be located. This setup cannot proceed. Make sure that the correct .tvt file is located in the same folder as this setup package and restart this setup.

Any suggestions guys as to what might be going wrong here?
I remind that it's a fresh copy of Windows XP i have, not the OEM preinstalled Vista.

Apparently, you need the correct language version of RnR for it to install properly. Whatever language the System Local is set to in Windows, is the language of the RnR file that you need to download and install. See link in following post.

Although I have English windows, i had changed the Regional Settings to Greek, so took them back to English and voila! it worked, thanks Jabbar.

So version3 has installed, then i run the System Update but it doesn't find the version4 to install. Can it be that version4 is only for Vista?! :?:

There are (2) different version 4's. One for Vista and one for XP and W2K. However version 4 of either version is only supported on ThinkPads from model T43 onward. Several that have installed version 4 on a T42 claimed that the installation seemed to go OK, but the program would not run properly.

I wouldn't delete it in case it is still usable. I am not really sure how converting back to XP with a Vista service partition will work out. You may still have a usable Vista service partition after installing Rescue and Recovery, then again you may not. If you do not install Rescue and Recovery, then the service partition should not be affected except for the MBR from your install of XP. The MBR can be repaired with the Rescue and Recovery - Recovery Repair Diskette.

well i made the Recovery Media from when the machine booted with preinstalled Vista, so if i delete the service partition i want to believe that i can get it all back as it came from mammy-Lenovo. Right?

If yes, why not delete the service partition or create?
If i do install version 4, won't it create a new service partition?

i m bit confused as you can see

If you made a set of Product Recovery Discs, then yes they will restore your hard drive back to how it came from the factory.

Installing Rescue and Recovery will not create a service partition. Only the Product Recovery Discs can do that. However installing Rescue and Recovery will change the Rescue and Recovery program in the service partition. If you have Vista in the service partition, then install the XP version of Rescue and Recovery, I am not sure what the outcome will be.

You can delete the service partition and just have your C:\ Windows partition and still install Rescue and Recovery. Rescue and Recovery will install to the C:\ partition. You will be able to use Rescue and Recovery from Windows to do backups and restore files, but you will not be able to boot up into Rescue and Recovery from your hard drive. If you needed to do a complete restore, I believe you will need to boot up a Rescue Media CD, and once in Rescue and Recovery tell it to restore the backup.

If all you are using Rescue and Recovery for is backups, I would consider purchasing different backup software that is more flexible. I use StompSoft Backup MyPC myself. This software was acquired by Migo. See following link. http://store.migosoftware.com/pc-backup ... eID=PCBUHM

There is also alot to be said for cloning as well. You have to purchase an extra hard drive and a hard drive adapter, such as the Ultrabay 2nd hard drive adapter, or an external USB enclosure. Many prefer regular cloning as opposed to using backup software.

another mystery solved thanks to the this forum and the wonderful TPers that are it's soul.

Jabbar thanks, everything went smooth by installing the new version and when the blue button is pressed during boot, R&R works fine as it seems so far. I didn't try do anything else, but if i backup now, where will it store the backup?

And i choose to restore, what will it restore?
The preinstalled Vista or nothing really?
