PC Maintenance Utility?
PC Maintenance Utility?
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a utility that will perform registry fixes/cleanup -- something along the lines of Norton Utilities and the powerful registry utility of the long-gone "Fix-It!" Utlities suite. I currently use the feature in Norton Systemworks 2003, but am looking for something more accurate and robust.
On the other hand, do I even need such a utility? How do you all usually deal with registry cleanup (especially after uninstalls)?
Thanks in advance for your input!

Wow! I hadn't realized RM was held in such low esteem.Leon wrote:see this link for PC Mag reviews of these programs:
I've been using Ver. 3.0 rather than the 2.1 that was reviewed and find none of the problems or shortcomings that were discussed.
Ah well, as with most of these "utilities" ya pays ya money and ya takes a chance.

I've been using MS RegClean 4.1a since it was released. It works on Win95, Win98, Win2k and NT4.mgp wrote:FYI, I am also aware of Microsoft's RegClean program (some say it still has a use with WinXP, but I really don't know).
I've read a number of messages on the web stating that it isn't safe to use on WinXP.
For now, I'll trust others recommendations against RegClean and XP.

I am using the recent version 3 of Registry mechanic. It has a roll back mechanism and is probably safe. Although it finds and cures everytime I call it almost a trillion inconsistencies (a few hundred), I could not detect a single positive or negative effect yet. I was hoping it cures some drive letter problems which it did not. But: Maybe it does have an effect by avoiding problems with the registry in the future?
I bought and regularly use RegClean from www.macecraft.com. Same guy that makes JV16 Power Tools.

I use Norton System Works 2004 but found that RegScrubXP finds more items to clean safely. It creates backups for all changes and is free
