how to remove SP2 install files junk?

#1 Post by nikemen » Thu Jul 05, 2007 9:04 am

So, I finally went up to sp2 on my T41, which was running pretty solid, but too many interesting and necessary programs are now requiring SP2.

I did the install online through windows update, and it failed twice, but the third time it too. Kick out some error, but said it was installed and it appears to be.

But, I am left with a reduction in available capacity of 1.2GB after the install. Is this normal? that seems pretty darn high. Is there a way to pull some of either the backup files out, or the install file?

SP2 adds many security enhancements and other features, it's not just bug fix pack. While i don't know if 1.2GB is a normal amount i can't say it isn't either. There are tons of fixes in SP2 as well as a lot of new features.

The install probably put in backup files in case you ever want to uninstall SP2. Every update through the web does this. If you downloaded the standalone install file (which I recommend) you have the option of not backing up the original files. The backup is what is taking up the extra 600MB because SP2 replaces just about every critical file for XP.

Yeah, I think CCleaner does get rid of the backup files.
