What is the benefit of upgrading to Vista 64

I have a 8744-J2U with Vista Business and I keep wondering what benefit would I have if I install the 64bit version of the operating system? Any trade-offs?

Unless you have some 64-bit apps, you won't really see any significant benefit in the short term.

You can use more than 3 GB of RAM.

Does Office 2007 is a 64 bit application?

It is not. Maybe Office 2010 ... in the meantime, while you can access 4 GB of memory, there is not a lot of real-world gain.

Personally, my thinking is to switch to 64 bits in a few years' time when Adobe builds a 64-bit version of Photoshop.

my friend bought a machine running 64bit XP and was quite impressed with himself at the time. I don't think he realized finding apps and drivers would pretty much relagate the machine to sitting at home (i think it was a dell laptop) which it has been as I have never seen it beyond the first time he brought it in to show off.

I run Vista 64 on a Thinkpad T60P upgraded to Core 2 Duo. It has real stability issues but when running is much faster than the same machine when booted to an XP disk.

I don't know If I would see the same speed with 32 bit version.

I feel the exact opposite. When I got my x61 tablet it had vista business 32bit on it and it was glitchy and laggy and froze a good 5 times within the first few days.

Last night I installed ultimate x64 and so far this thing is flawless. Knock on wood I guess. It may just have a lot to do with the system you're using. I've got a low voltage 1.6ghz core2duo and 2gb of RAM with 1gb of intel turbo mem, so it is a pretty quick machine in the first place.

I htink you are correct that the machine makes the difference. I have 2.1 C2D with 3 GB Ram and 4 GB of Readyboost (Expresscard). XP does not take advantage of the C2D lilke the 64 does.

On my second install of Ultimate 64 (reformated) I was careful about the Lenovo driver installation sequence and I have not installed anything Norton on it. Also I did not install the Lenovo video driver (ATI FileGL 5200) but instead let Microsoft download and install the one it wanted.

My next hurdle will the be the HP OfficeJet driver (Ethernet connection) that was a major source of instability.

It depends...what applications you run, how intense your workload is, what drivers you need to load, etc.

I do a lot of dev and testing using virtual machines; having that extra Gb of ram available is huge for me. Right now I have 6 virtual machines running on VMware and I"m amazed how well this laptop handles the load.

I'm not sure if you'll see a 64-bit version of Office for some time. I use Office 2007, and x64 handles 32-bit applications without any issue. It's the apps that still use 16-bit installers that you'll have trouble with.

The only driver issue I've had so far is an unsigned 64-bit driver for my Sprint USB broadband device, but disabling driver signing allows it to load and work fine. BTW, I use an HP OfficeJet 7310 with builtin ethernet, and had no problem letting the Vista driver load.

The only stability issue I have is when I try to bring the laptop out of sleep mode and plug in a USB device that wasn't there when it went to sleep, or vice versa. Other than that, absolutely no stability issues.

Your mileage will definitely vary.
