After SP2 and a couple updates, thinkpad is unusable!
After SP2 and a couple updates, thinkpad is unusable!
So, I made the jump on my daily driver, T41 finally to SP2.
Everything went pretty well, but I also had to do a great deal of FURTHER updates from windowsupdate.
Now, upon bootup and login, it takes about FIVE minutes to get to the desktop, this is VERY new. I haven't added any services, and don't see TOO many new ones running. But, this is troubling.
As well, once I get to the desktop, it now takes another 90+seconds to get a networking connection running.
AND, to top it all off, the FANS are running faster and more often and the unit is running about 5C more than usual. I run the TP Fan control product, but with my previous settings, it would normally keep everything silent all the time. Now, the fans are kicking in and it goes from yellow to RED!
What could be causing this? Is there something with SP2 that is loading early and or running CONSTANTLY that I might turn off?

A couple of possibilities...
60-second to 120-second delay occurs in user authentication when you log on to Windows XP in a wireless network
The system performance is slow after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2 or upgrade to Windows XP with Service Pack 2
You may receive Error 678 or Error 769 when you try to connect to the Internet or when you try to browse the Internet after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2
Try to determine what is controlling your wireless connection - Windows or Access Connections. Try changing settings to disable Wireless connection at Windows logon. Try turning off your wireless adapter before shutdown, and verify that it stays off after rebooting. Try changing the state of the Wireless Zero Configuration service. If it is started, then stop and disable it. If it is stopped, set to automatic and start the service. Reboot and see how it acts. Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Wireless Zero Configuration.

thanks
Thanks for the posts, I'll review them all.
Just not sure why the wireless login or DHCP networking login would be so much differant just after SP2 or one of the most recent update updates?
I have WZC turned off, at least it won't manage the connection. I'll try to completly disable the service and see if that helps.

off
So, I did have WZC turned off, or on manual at least. So, is there a good way to see what is trying to do what at bootup?
is bootvis still around and usefull, or is there another tool that is better for this sort of thing?

Nope, not at all. I have been running SP 2 since it came out, and my CPU on my T41 runs at less than 2% more than 98% of the time.nikemen wrote:So, I made the jump on my daily driver, T41 finally to SP2.

I have always had trouble installing SP2 onto XP. Because of this, I slipstreamed SP2 into my install disk (plus most of the updates since then) I highly recommend doing this because it causes fewer headaches and you don't have to spend hours downloading and installing updates after you do a clean install.
Back to your issue. I think it is related to the winlogon service. Something is scheduled to start with that service and it is causing the system to hang. It is most likely a networking service that is causing the issue. Have you done any more updates since installing SP2? I think some of the issues were fixed with the updates that came after SP2s release. Google Process Explorer and use that program to see what is running and figure out how to disable what you don't need; this may increase you login time.

I have finally rejoined the dark side.

*cough* winblows *cough*You have spyware or malware running on the computer.
windows [naturally] comes with spyware installed on it, when you install any sort of toolbar on any browser it tends to watch you, report back to the man himself..etc and so forth.
Sp2 contains more.
now naturally a lot of people who worship windows [or don't do their research] will say its a big load of steaming bullstuff. well, do a fresh install of Windows XP on whatever machine, and then run AdAware SE...full scan, no skimping out here, you'll come up with around 13 results for "Alexa" a form of spyware. you can google alexa to see what it does more specifically, but its there in both SP1 and SP2, and theres great potential for it being in SP3 [just a big load of hotfixes right?].
each time you buy Anti-Virus software, or a "strong" firewall, you build up the economy of winblows.
why update through the man when you can google for the installer files that people have posted direct links to? i have Windows Installer 3.1, i have the Dual CPU fix for processor scheduling, and somewhere i have the svchost fix....and i don't update my M$ OS....and i'm running SP2 no less...

Only if you allow it to be installed. This "windows" problem is typically the loose nut behind the keyboard.bonestonne wrote: windows [naturally] comes with spyware installed on it, when you install any sort of toolbar on any browser it tends to watch you, report back to the man himself..etc and so forth.
