KB 929191--hotfix for Lenovo computers

#1 Post by lponz7 » Wed Jul 18, 2007 5:28 pm

Anyone know anything about the Microsoft Knoweldge Base page 929191 that was up and then disappeared from the MS website? It actually showed up as a recommended update under my System Update but would not install.

It apparently dealt with an issue described as: "IBM and Lenovo computers may take longer to start Windows Vista than computers from other manufacturers," and is apparently part of Vista SP 1.

I actually called Micorsoft and, although they sent me the hotfix associated with this article, they were unable to tell me anything about it or provide a more complete description. For that reason, although I am experiencing slow boot time, I am a little reluctant to install it without more definitive documentation.

Therefore, if anyone made a copy of this KB article before it was taken down and could reproduce or even summarize it here, I'd be very appreciative. For now it's a mystery. Thanks. Lponz7

No, SP1 is not out, except in beta, but some of the indivdual fixes are leaking early. The rep I spoke with could not come up with any information on her system about this article or fix, but did send me the link to the hotfix that had been associated with that article. The file bears the name 295523_intl_I386_zip.exe

Well, i personally am running Vista on two machines one t60 Business and a v200 Ultimate, and the startup times have not been bad on either, about the same as my t60 and R52 running XPpro, are you experiencing slow bootup times? Have you timed it, just curious.

I've timed it multiple times measured from the point of entering my password (not actually from hitting the power button). I was consistently running 3 minutes or more to get a usable desktop. Changing the boot order to place my hard drive first (the default was second) seems to have shaved about 45 seconds to a minute off. I've also disabled all unnecessary services and start-up programs, including some of the ThinkVantage utilities.

If you google that KB number you will get several hits about this hotfix.

The fix probably addresses the problem described here:
http://www.lenovoblogs.com/insidethebox/?p=50

See this link at Lenovo http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67872

I tried to install the patch on Vista 64 but I get a message that "The update does not apply to your system"

If anyone wants to know how fast it takes for Vista to boot up, you can use "Event Viewer" to see it.

On the left panel select...

Applications and Service Logs
Microsoft
Windows
Diagnostics-Performance
Operational

In the main part of Event Viewer, you'll see something like this.

As you can see, my system boots in a bout 40 seconds. I wish it was faster.

I tried to install the patch from the link on RonS's message on a Vista 32 bit system, but get the same message he did about it not applying to my system.

Event viewer tells me that there was an error, but not what to do about it--no specific program identified.

Frustrating. I envy your 40 second boot time.

Is this from cold start to login successful? Desktop ready? Something else?

It's from cold start to login screen. With my fingerprint reader login happens right as soon as the login screen appears.

I got this hotfix installed thru system update directly from lenovo. But actually i didn't notice any improvements on startup. My machine starts up just like it did with xp. Maybe a little bit faster.

I'm wondering if it really installed. It could be that System Update didn't display the error message that we're seeing when the patch is manually installed.

I tried to install through System Update before the fix disappeared from there as well. You do not receive the same obvious pop-up that appears if you update manually, but a closer inspection revealed (at least in my case) that it did not install.

Hm that's strange. I got it listed under programs and updates in control panel.

I have a suspicion that "This update does not apply to your system" may also mean You have already installed this update, but I am not sure about that.
