xp hangs during fadein screen & some fresh-install quest

#1 Post by joshrob » Mon Jul 30, 2007 7:08 pm

hi,

after having some VALVe's source engine crashes and being forced to hold the power button to force my r60 to turn off, my xp pro sp2 installation started to hang during start-up in the time of the fade-in winxp logo screen.

any clues, remedies for this?

Generally I was thinking about fresh-installing windows for some time now, the source-crash issue will only make the reinstall happen earlier... so maybe now it's the right moment.

I'd like to ask which "fresh windows installation guide" would you recommend?

http://web.archive.org/web/200511182249 ... /index.htm
or
http://kylefarnung.com/index.php/2007/0 ... tom_oem_wi

or maybe some other?

I have also some questions concerning the fresh-install:
a) is it possible to put the "fresh-install source files" into the hidden recovery partition?
b) can I not to install any partition-magic-like software and merge the hidden partition with the other one using windows installation program. (maybe "merge" is not the proper word here, i meant: delete two partitions, create one bigger, format it and then install windows)
c) after merging the partitions, if something goes wrong will I be able to restore the system from CDs I've made some time ago? will it recover only windows or the hidden partition as well?
[edited]
d) after fresh-installing windows and deleting the hidden partition will I be able to use rescue and recovery for scheduling backups? in other words does rescue and recovery use hidden partition to store backups?

Regards,
Jakub

Hi , to you way over there in Poland
This is what I have done:
If KEEP prez Xp installation(check on lines fourms)
1. How many start programs, ck MSCONFIG, stop most of them
2. RAM memory 512MB is min
3. Run Fittness Test on harddrive
4. all this OK should give 20-40sec startup time

INSTALL New XP:
1. LEVONO(IBM) gives instructions how to make Recovery Patition to use F11 option.
2. I made dual boot New XP with old Xp. Take out HDD shrink
patition for approx 15Gig free space, Used my other comp that has VISTA and a USB HDD adapter for HDD and installed new Xp in free
space.
3. OR Clean install Xp, it wips out all Hdd data, an you have no back up OS (also Mirosoft likes both)

luck, Waynesdukeess
