Vista Log-On - Can't change method to C A D

#1 Post by andyP » Wed Aug 01, 2007 10:36 am

I'm getting really frustrated regarding logging on to Vista. :x
In Vista Ultimate I've created all the necessary accounts I need: admin/domain, me/domain, admin/local and me/local. The problem arises that in User Accounts - Advanced I am not able to enable the safe log-on mode, the good old Ctrl-Alt-Del. I like to be able to quickly swap users for various tasks and I find this method quicker as having to click click my way through.

Can somebody please let me know what I've missed?

Edit: apologies to those who have read this and asked themselves, "wtf is he talking about?". I've edited what was written as Strg to Ctrl - my excuse is computing 12 years in german, I forgot to translate it. BUT I did get "Del" right instead of the german "Entf" :)

Click Start and type gpedit.msc

You'll find a screen like this one:

In the tree:
Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Setting > Local Policies > Security Options

Then go to the right and find "Interactive logon: do not require CTRL+ALT+DeL" double click and disable it.

enabled: vista login screen
disabled: classic login screen (win2k style)

Hi Melvyn, thanks very much for your assistance. I found it no probs, however it resets after one new start.
This is probably because I couldn't find where to check / change the other settings you mentioned.
enabled: vista login screen
disabled: classic login screen (win2k style)
Another "nudge" in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I too am unable to get Ctrl+Alt+Del to stick -- log off or reboot, and it's back to its old ways, no Ctrl+Alt+Del prompt.

ThinkPads running Windows 2000 don't have this problem -- the fingerprint reader replaces the GINA and prompts to swipe a finger or press Ctrl+Alt+Del to enter name and password.

Is there a fix that allows Vista to operate with the fingerprint reader and with the Ctrl+Alt+Del policy intact?
