SP2 was a complete re-write of XP. It required essentially all new drivers on my T30 and on my T41. The only practical way for clients was to build new images and re-image. SP1 could be installed with existing drivers and so was not big deal.

Do you have any idea if SP3 is a re-write?

i've heard little kiddies at my school [the freshmen] talk about how they're gonna get Sp3 as soon as it comes out.

i can't say any OS is without its flaws, but it seems as though the introduction of the multi-core processor was trouble for XP...sure there have been dual CPU computers back all the way, but you see so many hotfixes, is Sp3 really all that to want?

the way SP2 changed my computer really bugged me....what am i to expect in Sp3?

Is it going to be necessary to have?

Also on a sidenote, do I need to get SP1 if I'm getting SP2?

Service Pack 2 had many updates to software on Service Pack 1, so if you're getting Service Pack 2 you are all set. Check Microsoft Update for the latest updates to Service Pack 2.

Microsoft service packs are cummulative, so the answer is no.

Thanks guys.

Back to SP3, I'm surprised Microsoft would consider releasing it. I would assume they would try promoting Vista more to consumers.

No surprise. Microsoft themselves said at the same time as they were releasing Vista that SP3 for XP would be available in 2008 sometime. ... JDH

Being a bit cynical here, but maybe sp3 will be released in a secret effort to actually make XP less useable, more problematic and more 'vista' like in regards to future security code.

SP3 could be designed to increase the numbers of people that switch to vista, and to get code in place for future security patches that microsoft wants people to have (content management etc), if they decide not to use vista.

Or it could be a genuine attempt to improve the lifespan of XP and fix problems.

But this is microsoft we are talking about.......

You would think MS would've started that behavior with earlier OS versions, though. SPs for Win2K didn't destabilize it; my desktop system at home runs Win2K, has the last SP and all publicly available Windows updates and still runs just fine :)

i wouldn't be too surprised honestly...they might try to shove something in that can only be fixed through an upgrade...and in slower computers, the upgrade may entail a whole new computer.

but did sales for W2k doubled when XP came out? cause this is the case of Vista.

They are highly unlikely to want to upset their corporate licencees, who usually buy a whole swag of MS products, not just a desktop OS.

Cheers,

<<Windows XP SP3 pre-beta is in testers’ hands>>

Also apparently already in the hands of net users! (Not me! I will wait to become a legitimate tester when it is officially released on the general public.)
