My T61 is on order-What problems can I expect from Vista?

#1 Post by tandyman » Sun Aug 12, 2007 1:04 am

I am currently waiting for the stork to delivermy newborn T61 to me, and I have heard many issues about Windows Vista and the very-very long boot time that I should expect.

My system will only have the Windows Vista "Home Basic" version installed, so as I understand it, this version already has less "stuff" that will make my system take longer to boot-up.

Any specifics tips on what programs and how-to remove them all from start-up to minimize my boot-up time. I am only planning on using the computer for basic everyday computing--nothing fancy or any different than my desktop usage (it has Windows XP), just surfing, playing movies, data processing at work, some word processing, etc...

Thanks

You may want to look at the Vista forum here

I'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on my T60p and I really like it, but it took some tweaking to get it the way I want.

I found that with ALL the updates from MS installed, my Vista 64 is beginning to gain stability. The 32 bit version you will likely get has better application compatibility I hear.

My recommendation is that when you get it, download and install all the MS updates and all the Lenovo driver updates for Vista too.

Vista is still really a Beta test product if you put many applications on it. My advice is to avoid Norton/Symantec stuff. I tried their 360 and the Internet Security 2007. Had to reformat the HD. I suspect MS is trying to kill them off.

Symantec Antivirus 10.2 (this is the corporate stuff) seems to play pretty nicely with Vista. I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised by this ... :?

My two cents:

1- Boot time: AFAIK, you will not spend your time rebooting. You boot and use the machine. If you loss 30 seconds or not, the world will survive. You boot and will use it for (in average) at least, maybe 2 hours. Another people use it for 10 or 20 hours per reboot; others spend weeks without rebooting. If you reboot 20 times per day, you'll lose maybe 1 hour... So, boot time is not a factor to take the decision. If in your way of doing the things you must open and close the laptop, then instead of shutdown, set it to sleep.

2- You're expecting issues. Murphy's law says you'll have them. Problems aren't looking for you. You're looking for them.

Excuse me if I was rude.

Anyways, you're receiving one of the best computers available in the market. I don't figure a world in which you can't be satisfied with performance. What are going to do with it? What's the purpose? Gaming machine? Developing? Office use?

Not a problem. Your comments were not at all taken that way. You have valid points and I appreciate your candor.

My main reason is business use but will be used whenever I need a backup to my home PC or for personal use if on vacation (DVD's, surfing, etc..).

My conern with vista primarily stems from all that i have heard. I guess the best thing I can do is make up my own mind.
