LAN driver problem T60

#1 Post by andrewb » Thu Aug 23, 2007 2:44 pm

I was hoping someone might be able to give me a pointer over a problem which, for the life of me, I cannot resolve. I have searched the forums but cannot find anything of assistance.

Am using a T60 with XP-SP2. The hardware seems OK but there seem to be endless software problems, especially with the loading of drivers. I am using the exact same software on a T43 and without any problems. In only 6 weeks, I have already performed 8 complete reinstalls on the T60 and I am getting more than a bit cheesed off.

My current problem concerns my LAN connection. This was working fine and using the Broadcom NetXtreme driver but, for no obvious or identifiable reason, the driver disappeared and was replaced with an Intel Driver (per Device Manager). I have donwloaded and reinstalled the Broadcom driver but cannot get this to marry up with the network adapter for the LAN.

In the hope that this explanation makes sense, might anyone be able to provide any comments which could help me resolve this please ?

The T60 uses the Intel PRO/1000 LAN adapter only. The T43 also came with an Intel PRO/1000 LAN adapter but some of them also came with the Broadcom NetXtreme adapter. This leads me to suspect you might have used other T43 drivers in your T60 which may be the cause of all your other problems.

I suggest you use system update to download and install the correct drivers and utilities: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... VSU-UPDATE

Thanks, yes, it certainly seems you are right, but probably only in relation to the LAN driver. My T43 does use the Broadcom driver and, of course, with the T60 having no connectivity, I have been using the T43 to source the drivers. To date, all my other driver problems (and boy, they seem to have been never ending) all concern proprietary software but for nothing which isn't already happily in use on another machine and with no problems whatsoever. Thanks, again.

I have seen similar posts recently. IIRC, if you plug in an active ethernet cable to the port, then reboot, the connection should come back. I believe this has something to do with power management settings. I'll look for the thread(s) and post back.

EDIT: Here is the thread. I guess you don't have to reboot, just plug the cable back in.

Just a note in follow up, in case it might be informative to anyone else.

My lack of Ethernet connectivity has been fixed. I have concluded it was not a driver problem but, rather, something to do with my TCP/IP settings after I downloaded an MS upgrade (which file, I have no idea).

Anyway, I took a chance on this program WinSock XP Fix and it has done the trick (albeit after a somewhat meandering 24 hour journey !).
