File transfer very slow

#1 Post by peekay » Sat Aug 25, 2007 6:20 am

Hi folks,

i discovered my T61 is much too slow by copying couple of large files to a XP machine. Got 100MBit/s LAN connection on both sides, only 2000KBit/s. Device is up-to-date, even Software!

Thanks for help ;)

Yep, yet another Vista annoyance. The various patches and fixes do little or nothing for this gigantic bug. THE WORKAROUND is to use RoboCopy which is now available on all Vista versions. It's super fast and easy to use. Here's an example of what I do:

robocopy "D:\Documents" "T:\Documents_backup_folder" /mir
pause

Use the quotes where they are shown. To edit your own batch file, simply cut and paste the desired locations in between the quotes. Source is on the left, destination is on the right. "Pause" forces the batch file to stop when finished so you can see the result. That's optional. "/mir" means files not on destination will be deleted. For help, go to CMD and type "Robocopy /?" without the quotes, of course. Certain files in your copy job may require that you run CMD in Admin mode.

hi,
thank you for your replies!

I noticed, that file transfers from/to local drives aren't slow as copying file over ms-network (shares). so what can I do?

greetings

You don't even need to ask. ;)

Here's my solution after hours of testing:

1. Turn off Windows Vista TCP auto-tuning (TCP-Window-Size detection)
2. Increase max. number of network connections from 2 to 99999
3. Install patches listed in previous posts

speed gain ~ 5000kb/s ^^

I haven't done that since XP. How does one do it in Vista?
