Partitioning Ideas in Windows XP

#1 Post by CRSO » Fri Aug 31, 2007 6:50 pm

I am new to partitioning and always just had one big ol' hard drive. I think I can benefit a lot from it but could use some help...

I have a T60 with a 100GB SATA dual-booting to 2 copies of XP. So far I have

15GB dedicated as ''C'' for ''general use'' (internet, email, photoshop, flash, word, excel, etc..).

15GB dedicated as ''D'' for audio production (I need XP in barebones mode here, no internet or programs unrelated to audio).

5GB dedicated as ''E'' for temporary storage of current tracks I am working with (or music downloads, imports, etc.) until they find their final resting place in

65GB (ish) dedicated as ''F'' (or ''G'' when I put a HDD in the ultrabay. Why the heck doesn't the partition become ''F'' and the ultrabay HDD become ''G''????? It drives me nuts). Anyhow, this is where I store my music. All my other stuff I didn't get to yet because I need to get a 250GB HDD (unless I want to keep all my documents, pictures, videos, etc on an external drive (which I don't)).

Do I seem to be on the right track? I just want to try out partitioning and see if I can reap the benefits. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I'd rather have a 3 year old IBM than a new Dell (or HP)...

Couldn't you just set up a second Hardware Profile to turn off all of the "stuff" you don't need (NIC, WNIC, BT, CD/DVD, etc). At least that way you just run what you need to and unload the startup programs that you don't need.

Simple - your "F" partition is an extended partition, and the ultrabay drive has a primary partition.

Primary partitions always have first shot at drive letters. Windows used to allow you to force a drive letter, but I haven't tried to do it on a version newer than 98SE.

Ah, now that makes sense... i'll look into seeing if I can force drive letters.
