grrrr... so i am running win 98 on this thinkpad 600x that i am converting into a picture frame i couldnt find siutable software to fetch the photos from an FTP site so i wrote my own with Vb 6 i went to install the vb6 runtimes on the 600 and rebooted. Now the vb6 runtimes arent able to be located! i installed a pack of files from a 3rd party site and now shell32.dll crashes on boot and even in safe mode.. i am reinstalling win98 right now. i dont feel like messing with this anymore. i havent had anything but problems with this laptop. the networking drivers wont install correctly internet explorer updates wont install and now the vb6 wouldnt run either. i had this same issue with my T20 so i put Xp on it. this is difficult because i allready glued the LCD to the back of the laptop. i dont have a usb keyboard so i have it folded out and it's difficult to work with. its been around 10 hours since i started this project.

I suspect the bulk of your problem is Windows 98. Every machine I have run Windows 98 on, I have had problems with. Scrap that POS OS and put on Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP and you will be a lot better off IMO. Linux would be another good choice, although I personally have little experience with it.

IMO, the 600X is a great laptop.

i got it running the drive had a couple of bad cluters. the system folder was on one of the clusters. runs good now. i got the slideshow software running. i will post it when i finish it as it has more programming needed. but it logs into an FTP server and downloads the photos to the drive, it will update hourly and download any new photos. then it will display them on the screen in 5 second intervals. it will be better for people who dont want to use screensavers and whatnot.

i would use an alternate OS but i didnt want to mess around trying to make anymore updates... and i am sending it to my gma who cant use linux.

Do get rid of Windows 98 as suggested. As for slideshow software, I use Lview - very nice piece of software. ... JDH

Lview is for Windows, not for Linux. For FTP, I use WS-FTP (again for Windows). ... JDH
