Hang when restarting WinXP...

#1 Post by o1sowise » Tue Sep 04, 2007 4:54 pm

If I reboot, Windows (XP Pro SP2) hangs when it restarts:
  • I see the Initial screen (where I can press F1 for the BIOS)
  • I then see the sercurity screen where it accepts my fingerprint
  • I see power-on password accepted
  • I then see hdd password accepted
  • I then see config.sys menu
  • I then see the full-screen windows logo try to appear (the one with the sideways thermometer that goes from side to side, showing progress). This screen tries to animate its way into focus, but never makes it. I can see a faint windows logo, but I have to power-off for >5 minutes, then all is good again.
 :?

btw - sorry for the multiple posts. I didn't realize that pointers counted :(
I was just trying to reach a larger audience, buy putting a pointer in a few other categories... Sorry :(

Upen REstarting your TP, start pressing the F8 button, then select start in Safe Mode.
It will then show a load of drivers etc. on your screen.
Write down the name of the last one that appears before it boots (or not) and report that here.
You may have a corrupt driver problem.
You can try and fix this, click on Start/Run and type sfc /scannow and hit enter. You may need your Windows CD.

Woah, thank you!
I won't be able to reboot for another few hours (major data center move in progress), but this gives me something to look forward to.

btw - any particular safe mode options I should choose?
Is /safeboot:minimal /sos ok?

sfc ran for a while and just ended. Can I assume that means I'm OK?

Upon Restart/F8 just pick the top-most Safe-Mode option from the menu.

SFC seems to be OK, so probably no driver-issue.

You could perhaps look into the M$ program UPHCLEAN, which gives a 'cleaner' shutdown of Windows by unloading the registry hives more controlled.

windows\system32\giveio.sys

I installed UPHCLEAN, but didn't notice anything during shutdown (no messages, but shutdown did seem longer)

It looks like this has been going on for a long time...
