Router needs to be set to open up port 21 and forward to a specific IP address (your Windows FTP server machine). What's the make and model of your router?

There should be a "port forwarding" section somewhere in the configuration. You will need to assign all port 21 traffic (FTP) to a particular IP address. If you are using DHCP for your FTP server, then if it drops off the network or is turned off, it might grab a different IP address. The solution is the assign that machine a fixed IP address.

i have done that, i have the router setup to Forward port 20 and 21 to the PC with the FTP server on it to no avail.

i ran a Sheilds up! port scan and my port 20 is "closed" and port 21 is open.

idk, rkawakami but YGPM

If you are using Internet Explorer, check in Internet Options > Advanced. Try checking the box: "Use Passive FTP".

Tried your FTP IP here at work and all I'm getting is a "connection closed" message. This is from the FTP Commander program.

And be sure to check Windows Firewall if you have Port 21 open for incomming and outgoing connections!

LOL i just had a thought, i dont use windows firewall but i do have avast, i havent thought of that, would that block connections past the router? because i can connect to it from computers that are connected to my router. i am at work so i will peak at it when i am at home.

rkawakami a port scan reveals that port 20 is closed but port 21 is open. i dont know what i should do to open port 20, all of my other ports show as hidden. what does internet explorer give you. it tells me here at work that it "could not access this folder check your connection settings and address. the connection to the server was reset."

I was using Firefox before and just tried IE. It works. I'm able to see two folders and retrieve 0505071604.jpg from one of them. I also re-tried Firefox and it does work as well. Don't know what the difference is between the other day and now, but it looks like you have an FTP server!

edit: Refreshing the folder contents seems to stumble or takes a while to finally respond. Using FTP Commander still does not work (get a "connection closed" message). In all cases, I'm logging in as an anonymous user. When I run an FTP server on my Sun Solaris system I know that it handles traffic on some random ports. See this for more info:

Ok i am changing settings around and would like some folks try to connect to my PC, here is the Addy: it's read only so no funny business

----PROBLEM SOLVED AND LINK REMOVED-----

report back what you get as i have nobody to help me out atm

there is a program on there called viewer.exe that downloads photos form the FTP server and plays them in a slideshow, i could use some testers for that as well.

just remember these steps, create a folder called C:\photo
Install VB6.0 runtimes, there may also be another file neded, but i dont know which one it is, it will tell you which file you need when it runs

I'm getting a "connection refused" error using Cyberduck on Mac OS X 10.3.9. I have tried both passive and active modes and anonymous login.

I just tried it using my at&t WWAN connection, with OpenDNS.

In Opera, I get the following error message:
Opera wrote:Error! Could not connect. FTP server may be too busy.

You tried to access the address ftp://xx.xx.xx.xxx/ which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the Web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page.

* Make sure your Internet connection is active and check whether other applications that rely on the same connection are working.

* Check that the setup of any Internet security software is correct and does not interfere with ordinary Web browsing.

* If you are behind a firewall on a Local Area Network and think this may be causing problems, talk to your systems administrator.

* Try pressing the F12 key on your keyboard and disabling proxy servers, unless you know that you are required to use a proxy to connect to the Internet. Reload the page.
I ran Internet Explorer 6 as an administrator from the C:\WINDOWS\ie7\ folder and I got this message:
IE6 wrote:Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the filename correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.

Details:
A connection with the server could not be established
I ran Internet Explorer 7 as an administrator from the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ folder and ran Network Diagnostics. The following is what is displayed:
Windows did not detect any problems with your internet connection. If your browser cannot display the page try the following:

- Refresh page: Search for the page again by clicking the Refresh button. A timeout could have occurred due to internet congestion.
- Check spelling: Check that the page address is spelled correctly. The address may have been mistyped.
- Access from a link: If there is a link to the page you are looking for, try accessing the page from that link.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Diagnostic log:
HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity

info FTP (Passive): Successfully connected to ftp.microsoft.com.
info HTTP: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com.
info HTTPS: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com.
I am thinking that maybe you have Simple File sharing turned on in Control Panel > Folder Options > View. Try turning that off, then check permissions on the folder by right-clicking on it and checking the Security tab.

yay it worx!

i had to open the Data ports, after much reading i discovered that most people who use passive FTP "think" that port 20 is used for the Data port. i found out that passive ftp opens random data ports which explains why the connection was flaky, port 20 is for active conections. i downloaded Quick and easy FTP, set a manual port range (IIS was a pain for this) and set em on the router and puff! i was being probed by a bot by morning time :)

anyway i will now remove my FTP link, for those who helped take a peek in there later in the day.

Thanks guys!

GOM!!!!!!!!! can you delete muh IP from ur post please :) and thats muh daughter in the yellow glasses
