How to remove the "System" process in XP?

#1 Post by mike20030405 » Thu Sep 20, 2007 2:29 pm

There is a process called "System" in Windows Task Manager consuming at least 50% of CPU all the time whatever I open a firefox tab, or type in sth in google search box.
I googled and someone said it is related to USB driver, then I removed USB device and reinstalled the USB driver, but, "System" is still there.
Someone said it is just because the memory sticks are loose. I replugged the memory sticks, still doesn't work.
If I don't open anything, the "System" is just quiet, doesn't bother the CPU at all.
This desktop system is P4 2.8G, Windows XP professional edition, 512x2 MB Ram. It is really slow, even slower than my PIII600M laptop.

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You cannot end the system process. Most system kernel-mode threads run as the System process. If you have a problem where system use a lot of CPU there is something else on your computer that is actually causing this problem.

It's obvious you have some kind of problems with your computer, but the problem isn't the system process it self. Normally the system process should use almost no CPU.

Did you always have this problem or did the problem start after you installed some software, drivers or anything else? Do you only see this problem using firefox? I would start by making sure there is no virus, spyware, keylogger, trojan etc on your computer. Then i would check software like antivirus, firewalls, anti spyware and that kind of software. Try to disable some of them and see if the problem goes away. Maybe you even have to uninstall some software if you find something you think might be the reason to see if that solve the problem.

Before I installed Prevx2 the system was pretty normal. The "System" thing sure came with the Prevx2.
I have already uninstalled this software, and cleaned the registry, but "System" is still there.

I also have Prevx2 installed on my T43. There are two processes that are associated with the program, PXConsole.exe and PXAgent.exe. Once Prevx completes its normal scan following bootup, neither rarely consumes any CPU cycles.

Are you sure you are not referring to "System Idle Process" whose User Name is displayed in Task Manager as "SYSTEM"? If so, it is always going to show "high" CPU usage. That is, your machine is essentially idle. On the other hand, the process "System" typically will show little or no CPU usage.

Either way, I don't think Prevx is your problem. Try rolling back to a System Restore point prior to your installation of Prevx2.

- rather than using Windows' own "Task Manager", try get the free (and highly recommended!) Process Explorer utility, also by Microsoft: Sysinternals Utilities - it has far greater flexibility than the Task Manager, and gives you far more freedom to e.g. terminate processes and to see child processes etc. Also, the utility Autoruns (for Windows) is highly useful; it will allow you to disable (permanently or temporary) various start-up programs and/or processes - enabling you to fine-tune your installation. Browse other free Sysinternals utilities here.

Best regards,

Joahn
