Check Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service

#2 Post by bdmclacken » Thu Sep 27, 2007 12:05 pm

Check if that service is running, consider disabling it if so, and see if this helps. This is probably helping to share media, and there is something about Media Player trying to keep the machine awake so it can respond to requests for media sharing now in Vista, which I think only applies in Home Premium or Ultimate Users.

AFAIK, a notebook computer will not enter Suspend if a video is running.

disk activity is a good sign.   that means it's trying to wake up but a piece of software is causing a hang or delay.

do you have client security solution or access connections software installed?   these seem to have the most issues with resuming in vista.

is one more a problem than another? do you know if hibernate would be a better choice?

CSS seems to be the bigger problem.   it was the cause of many delays in my factory vista installation and a few colleagues' XP installations.

i disabled hibernation so i can't comment on its performance.

You might consider saying "Hasta La Vista" to Windows Vista till Microsoft releases some major fixes; provided if the problem you stated is of major concern to you or your field of work.

Downgrading from Windows Vista to Windows XP.

I don't find this to be the case with me. i have hit sleep mode many times while a video is playing of the HD, not dvd. only problem i hate is that windows media player won't leave off where it stopped, video will start all over again, so you have to note where you left off before you hit play again

My T60p running Vista 64 can never be successfully awakened from 'Sleep' or 'Hibernate'. I MUST use 'Shutdown' instead. I have run System Update and Windows Update to get latest drivers etc.
I get various errors. The most common is that you log back into Vista, and the machines completely hangs apart from the mouse with 100% hard drive activity. It will stay in that state for ever, and you can't even bring up Task Manager.
Then next most common error is a completely black screen, unless you CTRL-ALT-DEL and then you get a Login box with Change Password, Task Manager etc. Any option selected then restores the black screen.

I have many other bugs in Vista too, eg the icons by the clock are non-functional 50% of the time, endless Office 2007 hangs, 10 mins boot time, incredibly slow performance, fingerprint reader never recognises my finger etc. I have re-installed Vista from clean install and have the same problem afterwards.
Interestly, XP Pro absolutely flies on this machine with my other hard drive. No problems at all.
Hard drive diagnostics proved both drives are fine.

I have the exact same issues. I am running Vista 64 on a T60P with a Core 2 Duo processor. I use the ReadyBoost on 4 Gbyte express PC card. I also have 3 Gbyte ram and a 200 GByte Hitachi drive at 7200 RPM. Video is the ATI FireGL V5200.

I like the features, navigation and search ability and I have a lot of software installed, so I continue to use it. I do run XP in a virtual machine for my Lotus Organizer which I still use.

I don't really have most of the other problems you mentioned but I have been very careful to remove applications that are not compatible. I don't use Norton (Avast instead) and I depend on the MS firewall. Roxio is a disaster on Vista particularly 64 bit so I totally removed that. Office 2007 runs fine. I did install Nero for DVD buring and they don't guarantee Vista 64 compatibility. I have seen more problems with the black screen and recover from sleep since. Jury is still out on that, but it is much happier with Vista than is Roxio.

Acrobat 8.1, Photoshop Elements 6, run fine as does Firefox and Thunderbird. I use the Lenovo Access Connections because I have the built in Verizon EVDO WAN card. I do have the current CSS (2007.0621.1715.28924) on there but for a while I just used the driver and not the application as there were problems.

I suspect that there is an issue with the Lenovo power drivers and the MS Mobility Center with this 64 bit version of Vista.

I do keep it updated with the latest from both MS and Lenovo and that may account for the recent reduction in stability.

Ever since I put Service Pack 1 a lot of issues with Sleep and Hibernation have gone away. I also upgraded from 1 gig to 1.5 gigs of RAM. Couldnt be happier with Vista :) Though they should release some software compatibility updates :|

Just Google for it. It has been spread around at various sites. Another guide is here http://www.ghacks.net/2007/10/14/downlo ... ck-1-beta/.

But beware! It's not offical! First off you can loose your activation and you will have an evaluation version of your os that will expire. Furthermore it's BETA so you are on your own if things go bad.

I found a site where they tell how to change the sleep settings in Vista. I did what they said and it is now doing better.
