Installing driver updates through Windows Update?
I am running Windows Vista and I noticed that there are various optional drivers available from the official Windows Update. For instance, there are Intel network drivers, NVidia gfx drivers, etc. Have you guys updated any of these or do you stick to the official IBM drivers?

Okay, those threads answer the drivers questions. Let me "hijack" the thread a bit. What about the Vista "important" or "recommended" updates other than drivers?ryengineer wrote:Please refer to the following threads:
I've got my Windows Vista Update settings set to notify me of updates, but wait to install the updates for me to take action. Before last night, I had one "recommended" update on hold (KB933928) but now I have four "important" and four "recommended" updates queued (as well as a ninth update--the MS Nvidia driver).
Where can I go for a "second opinion" concerning which of the four "important" and four "recommended" updates are worthwhile and safe?
First Thinkpad 755CX in 1995. First IBM: PC 1982 8088 w 64K RAM, dual floppy. Currently in use:

i've been installing the nvidia drivers from windows update and haven't had a problem with them yet. they report as being provided by nvidia so i don't feel that it's a big risk. i'm currently using version 7.15.11.5666 released on 9/28/2007. everything works well with my 3D apps so far. i don't play games and cannot comment on that aspect.

You can safely install those recommended and important knowledge bases. But when it comes to device drivers like nVidia gpu or intel/Atheros wireless/LAN drivers they'll be categorized as "optional" updates since you already have them installed from the manufacturer which is lenovo in this case.barrywohl wrote:Okay, those threads answer the drivers questions. The special thing about device drivers released by lenovo is they fully test, modify and tweak them for their machines if required which Microsoft don't or cannot.
