hi guys,
given the fact i needed more and more space, and too many dvd's lying around i got to NAS servers (buffalo 500gb and D-Link dns-323 -1tb-) but i face a very anoying map/log in issue:
even though on both the guest account is disabled windows tries to connect to them as guest, which is greyed out so i cannot select/write which user to connect with.
the only way i can do that is to map them and modify "connect under different user"....
i dont want them mapped (they wake up from standby whenever for ex explorer is opened)
how can i get the username ungreyed from logon to network folder promt?
thanks alot,
dorin

RE:fileservers
We've been having similar issues at my house for years every time my brother comes and f* something up, but I'm running a Linux based fileserver here. The same may apply to you though. Most of the time this error occurs it is because the fileserver is not set to allow anonymous logins.
Another trick that may help is to re-assign your computer's host-name and set a static IP. I've never figured why it helps, but it sometimes does.
As for the mapped network drives, there is a registry option that I usually have set on my laptops ([censored] if I remember it r/n though, a bit of searching on Google should do you well) that makes windows wait until the drive is actually accessed before connecting.

To enable the Guest account, you should be able to go to Start > Control Panel > Users, and do it from there. If not, go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management and do it from there. [sorry I am not booted into Windows at the moment to verify or provide more details]

Also, if you don't want mapped drives (and the annoyance that comes with having Windows "talk to" the mapped drives each time you open Windows Explorer or do a "File/Open" or "File/Save" operation), then consider using "My Network Places" instead.
On XP, a drive path that is saved to My Network Places will not be opened until you open the folder yourself, deliberately. You can still easily access the drive from File Open and File Save dialogs, only instead of having a drive letter you will find it under "Network Places".
The Vista equivalent to My Network Places is called "Network Locations" and operates similarly.
