Boot cd 98 or XP

#1 Post by superman_06 » Sat Oct 20, 2007 7:24 pm

I am tring to upgrade my Hard drive, I have a 60 gig for my T23, I have tried following the sticky but when it comes to d/l BCD all 3 links dont work. I have D/L the sp2. I have record now to burn cd's and my T23 doesnt have a floppy. I tried to make a win98 boot cd, and wrote the 4 disk set as img files on a CD (I am sure someone laughed after reading that) and it didnt work.

What are you actually trying to do? Do you want to replace your harddisk with a new one and install a fresh Windows XP on the new harddisk? Or do you want to transfer the contents of you current disk to the new one? Or are you trying to do something completely different?

I am "attempting" to but XP on a brand new hard drive, I dont need any info off the old hard drive... I have a winXP copy, but its not a boot disk, I think once I get it to the start up, I can get my winXP disk to load the rest... then I will just D/L all the latest drivers for everything else for the T23. I have burnt like 20 cd's tring to make a "boot cd", I cant seem to get it right though

It sounds like you are trying to use a slipstream CD or something similar. I also had problems creating a bootable CD and discovered the burning software I was using was the apparent culprit. I suggest you use a CD/RW disc for testing until you get a bootable CD, then you can use a CD/R disc for something more permanent. See following thread for more info.

I've used these instructions to slipstream SP2 into XP:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

Another option is BartPE from http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ but that takes a bit more work. It will also let you install any other helpful programs and drivers.

I also used to use Autopatcher from http://www.autopatcher.com but Micro$haft has put it's boot down on it, so unfortunately this is no longer an option. The last time I downloaded the full file (270MB!) was in August 2006 and I also got the September update.
I have not had the need to install any new XP since, but it was darned handy!

If you don't have a burn-program like Nero, go get this free program from http://cdburnerxp.se/
The older v3 inluded a lot more options, but since v4 it has been cut down to the bare essentials (from ca. 11MB to ca. 2MB).

.... the more I read, the more confused I get.

Is this susposed to all be on 1 cd? or make a boot cd and still use the XP cd I got?

If so do I just reburn the XP with another burn software?

I have D/L the serice pack #2, WinXP boot disk, WinXP, wnaspi, ..winburnerxp (Just now and it says to D/L framework also), T23 drivers/new bios....what do I use when?

When you slipstream a Windows XP install CD, everything fits onto one CD (the Windows OS and essential drivers). Look at the links in the thread I posted above or in RealBlackStuff's link to learn how to slipstream Service Pack 2 and your drivers onto the CD. The CD itself is burned in one operation. You combine everything as outlined in the links on your hard drive first, then burn the CD.

Any BIOS update should be applied before you install XP. Do not try to put the BIOS update on the CD. All your software aside from the drivers should be put on a separate CD(s).
