I do it all the time on an X41T with various sizes of SanDisk Micro Cruzer drives and others. In fact, I haven't yet met a USB flash drive that the machine would not boot from.
The BIOS in this machine will enumerate USB drives that are attached at boot time. As a result they are assigned drive letters in the DOS boot environment and are readily available in Linux.

If your ThinkPad has a recent BIOS, you should be able to boot from a USB Flash Key as long as the key contains a bootable OS. I do it all the time with various LINUX distros.
You have to go into the BIOS and
(1) enable USB
(2) In the Boot section of the BIOS, move the USB Key to the top of the boot priority list
(3) Save and reboot with the flash key inserted.
I have never booted WinXP from a USB Flash key - but apparently it is possible. Tom's Hardware (a usually reliable site) describes the method here:

Good luck!
