defrag c: -b and other defrag triks, vs perfect disk

#1 Post by mgo » Wed Oct 24, 2007 4:04 pm

Supposedly there is a undocumented -b switch for defrag that will speed up prefetch in XP. Does that also work in Vista? I notice Vista will allow the -b switch without complaint. But, is it working, or just "pretending"to?

There does seem to be hard drive activity when I run it using CMD.

Also, I've used Perfect Disk for years. Is it so much better than the "improved" defrag in Vista, or will Vista's native defrag do the job ok? I lke Perfect Disk ok, but I'm tired of having to re-boot and do the offline defrag so often.

Any thoughts from you other users?

vista's in-built defrag gives the best results from my experience in trying 30-day demos of perfectdisk and diskeeper.   i don't use any third-party defraggers anymore as boot times were better using vista's defrag.   my boot times are down to ~40 seconds on average according to event viewer.

here's my method on new installations...
cmd:   defrag c: -w -v
cmd:   defrag c: -b   (this does work and is still an undocumented switch)
vista defrag:   schedule it to run on day 1 of every month

from what i understand, vista's scheduled defrag optimizes boot files using the "-b" switch during the process.   however, i still run a command line -b defrag every once in a while just for my own piece of mind.

I use Perfect Disk V8 in on-line mode (never bother with off-line). It defrags daily and is faster than anything else I have seen, tried, or read about. This is in XP as I have not yet migrated to Vista (so I cannot comment on Vista). ... JDH
