Not All Computers Seen On Network

#1 Post by TikaC » Sun Nov 11, 2007 11:36 pm

Ok, Kitt is the ThinkPad T61 with Windows Home Vista Premium.
Karr is the ThinkPad 600 with Windows 2000 Pro (yes, I'm a Knight Rider fan ;) ) And Megatron is the main computer with Windows XP Pro SP2 and LLTD Responder installed - Home Built tower system.

Now, Here's what is weird:

Kitt can see Megatron and itself on the network (Start Menu, Network). But it cannot see Karr.

Karr can see Megatron and itself in My Network Places. But cannot see Kitt.

Megatron can see Karr and itself in My Network Places. But cannot see Kitt.

Kitt can transfer files to and from Megatron just fine though.

What's going on here? :??: Anyone know how to get all computers to see each other on the network?

BTW, the Windows Firewall is active in Kitt and Megatron. And I can even use Remote Desktop in Megatron if I need to (which is how I have it set up). For Karr, I'm using the free version of ZoneAlarm. But I have Kitt and Megatron's IPs on the wireless home network as "trusted". I've even double-checked to make sure the IPs were correct.

Something's fishy, so would like a bit of info on this if anyone knows what is happening here.

If you are using Access Connections on Kitt, you need to maybe deactivate printer and file sharing in the profile.

If you would be using a router, you should not have those problems.
If you prefer to work with DYNAMIC IP-addresses:
1) Set DHCP-server on the router to ON or ENABLED
2) Set all PCs/TPs to: receive automatic IP and DNS
3) Make sure all PCs/TPs are in the same WORKGROUP

If you prefer to work with FIXED IP-addresses:
A few basic setups when networking:

Router-setup WAN:
Protocol: Fixed IP
IP-address, Subnetmask and default Gateway: as per ISP-information
DNS-servers: as per ISP-information
Enable NAT

Router-setup LAN:
IP-address: set to e.g. 192.168.1.254 (or use default)
Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP-server: disable

Router: Some System-settings (depending on your router)
uPnP: disable
Dynamic routing: disable
Remote config: disable
Dynamic DNS: disable
Firewall: Block hacker attack: enable
Firewall: Block WAN request: enable
VPN: disable all settings unless you need it

PC-Settings
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Use the following IP address: 192.168.1.101 (102, 103 etc.)
Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254 (IP-address from your Router)
Use DNS Server address: 192.168.1.254 (IP-address from your Router)
Second DNS: leave blank or put in first DNS-server from WAN-part in Router

For both Dynamic and Fix:
Enable File/Printer sharing if you wish (works only within local network)
Check individual printer(s) that they are shared as well (in printer-settings)
And make sure all your PCs are in the same WORKGROUP.

If software firewall installed, enable the other PCs IP-address(es).
The free ZoneAlarm is quite often interfering with these. Instead use Sunbelt/Kerio's free firewall, or better, Comodo Firewall.
Do NOT activate/enable the Windows XP or Vista firewalls, they are pieces of crap and only protect against INcoming attacks.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

You probably have Simple File Sharing enabled on the XP machine and the Vista machine. Turn it off. Windows 2000 does not have simple file sharing and cannot deal with it. ... JDH
