T60P with Vista SP1 RC 32bit sees 4GB of RAM

#1 Post by maximus_ » Thu Nov 15, 2007 11:30 am

I just installed Vista SP1 RC and am now seeing 4GB where before I was seeing 3GB. Although 3GB is all that the OS can use. i just thought that it's interesting as with SP1 Beta and Vista with no SP only saw 3GB.

that's odd.   i've never seen vista report memory in "#.## GB" format -- it always reports as "#### MB".   vista x64 reports "4030 MB" and vista x86 reports "3070 MB" on my T61p.

i ran a test (linked here) showing the results of 4GB system memory under XP, 2003, vista x86, and vista x64.   if the official SP1 truly changes the results of vista x86 then i will re-test and update my findings.   if microsoft changed vista x86 to actually support memory hoisting (rather than simply reporting total memory installed) then i'm sure many users would be interested to know about it.

can you send me a link to SP1 RC?   i'd like to check its validity as well as test it on a spare drive.   thanks.

The only way I know to install Vista SP1 is to use a registry trick to make Windows Update install the RC as an update. Google it and you should find it. There is no official release as yet and there probably won't be until January.

However, I tried to do this on my T60p and it trashed the OS. Now I cannot open system properties or control panel or many system related options. Also, I do not have the new splash screen, and there are some other issues that make me suspect that although the update finished, it didn't actually install completely.

I cannot roll it back and will now have to reinstall Windows. I noticed via Google searches of the symptoms that other people have had this experience. Be warned.

Just to add some support to Maximus, I'll second that Vista SP1 does indeed report ram as GB. Now if someone would like to send me 4 GB of ram I'll see if my T60p also shows it as 4 GB. :D

yeah since the earliest betas it showed GB instead of MB which i hated. My T42 showed 2047MB instead of 2.0GB (i don't know where that 1MB went to) With the latest SP Beta it shows 2.0GB which is fine with me :) Other performance stuff too makes it run sweeter, even on another machine with 1GB and a 5400RPM drive instead.

can you use that extra 1gb for ramdisk and then use that extra space for swap file?

Interesting Because my T60p does appear to be having issues, what version of the ThinkPad power Manager are you running? I wonder if it is do to the less memory on mine.

no, unfortunately that last 1GB still goes completely unused even though vista reports it as being installed.

That sucks, I was almost ready to cancel my 2Gb order, and pick up a 4Gb kit instead for my 32bit vista (no plans to upgrade to 64bit in the future)

Well I've been running 2.08 with a lite colored background causing the battery gauge to appear white not the normal green color. After a period of a few hours time this causes explore to fail, it will restart without the gauge on the Taskbar and continue to run for about 20 hours or so, before it fails again. I've had it up and running today with a dark background for the desktop/wallpaper so the gauge is appearing it's normal green color. And it appears to be working better, hasn't failed yet.
