Windows XP Pro freeze on Modem Connection

I'm trying to figure out what made my x40 freeze upon random modem connection. I did try exit IBM access connection before connect to isp through modem. But sometime after modem successfully negotiate with isp, my x40 seems to be preoccupied with some task. I can't even get windows task manager to run. The harddisk light is blinking and I can't do anything even after waiting about 10 mins. I can only shut it down and restart. I have found one post on this forum regarding the situation like mine, but ther is no reply on that post.

Any idea? All suggestions are appreciated.
