Vista Ultimate Lite install.. Add tablet pc support back in?

#1 Post by nimba » Sat Dec 01, 2007 11:25 pm

Hi guys,

I got my new x60 tablet a couple of weeks ago but i had lots of problems with the default vista business that was preloaded so I downloaded a version of ultimate lite from one of those torrent sites (I already have a licence key from my university) and did a clean install.

Naturally, tablet pc support is missing because it was taken out with vLite.
Can i bring it back with the vista ultimate dvd? Any other way? I just need to merge it into the OS, i didnt think it would be that hard but I have been able to find nothing by googling.

Thank you in advance, the system is running SO much better now.. if i could just fix that.

I have never used a clean install of Windows Vista on tablet other than lenovo's oem preload so I am not sure if things are same as they were for Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Tablet 2005.

Windows XP Professional never had any support for tablet so running it on a tablet meant, one never had options to use tablet features.

Windows XP Tablet 2005 was never released in retail version, and was only sold as oem to vendors and computer manufacturers.

Now Microsoft haven't released a tablet version for Windows Vista and Vista is able to drive tablets since this time they've integrated the tablet support into this version of Windows. So my guess is if you install the drivers from lenovo website then you would be able to use the tablet features:

You can either run:

ThinkVantage System Update 3.10.

OR download the required drivers manually:

Drivers and software - ThinkPad X60 Tablet.

From your other post in X6x forum, it also seems you did not even create a Product Recovery disks before installing the fresh install of Windows Vista.

Vista Business and Ultimate are tablet-pc aware. So if you can get a original Vista DVD there should be no problem with it.

If you already got a Vista Key provided by your university, why don't you just ask your IT-department for providing you with an original Vista DVD?

that is true and thank you for your suggestions, but a ultimate lite install is when you've stripped many of the features that you dont use from the vista disk so that you can fit the entire OS on a CD-ROM and then you install a much less resource-needy, much more "lite" vista. One of the features stripped here was tablet pc functionality.
From further research, I discovered that re-integrating such a significant feature into an already finished lite install is very difficult and more than likely impossible to be done smoothly. My only option is to re-install the full version.

I hope this helps someone else!

If you go to Control Panel | Programs and Features | Turn windows features on or off do you see a "Tablet PC Optional components"?
