Vista SP1 RC1 is now available on TechNet (& probably MS

#1 Post by bill bolton » Fri Dec 07, 2007 12:18 am

Vista SP1 RC1 is now available for download in x86 (under 400MB size) and x64 (under 800MB size) versions for TechNet subscribers, and I strongly suspect that will also mean its available to MSDN subscribers as well.

Cheers,

Bill B.

I got mine from Tech Net this morning (always the early bird, that's me!) and installed it on a R50p with 2 gig of ram.

Other than a failure to create the desktop on first bootup, it went well. A hard power down and re-start fixed the desktop problem.

SP1 install took a full hour, as per the advisory on the window when it was launched. But, it just runs itself, allowing the user to go get lunch.

Boot up isn't noticeably faster, Copy and past is much faster. I run the "Classic" mode so cannot comment on Aero (which the R50p probably would not run anyway).

All in all, this older machine does dandy with SP1 and I even have to admit I like the way the screen looks much more than the way XP painted the screen.

If my other T'pads do this well, I might end up making Vista my OS of choice!

Office 2007, Perfect Disk and some other programs run fine..as fast or faster than when on XP. Microsft seems to be heading in the right direction with Vista now, based on my -one- install.

Yes it is up on MSDN in a number of ways, from a DVD for both x86 and x64 systems to a the above individual files as well as an option to experience it through the Windows Update process.

Interestingly I seem to be one of the few that experience a memory leak when doing the update. I have found it to be unstable on my Vista Ultimate system.

I have had SP1 RC1 running on both x86 and x64 Vista Ultimate installations for a couple of weeks now without any issues.

I've tried the update a number of times, and on my system explorer quits working. It takes something like 4 ~ 8 hours but it stops, the clock in windows side bar stops keeping time and I can not open windows, like my computer, or control panel, or even the Start menu. Restarting explorer resets it for another 4 ~ 8 hours. (can be done by clicking on the Taskbar windows figures out that Explorer has stopped working and offers to restart it) Uninstalling the update fixes the problem. Reinstalling the update brings it back. I am stumped.

Here's my experience so far since installing the RC1 bits on a T60 with Vista Ultimate.

First off, the installation takes about 30-45 minutes to complete with about 6 reboots between all update tasks but is straight forward and completed without any hickups at least on my TP.

After the first boot when finishing install it took a little bit longer for the desktop to come up but everything seemed ok, so far. I have a local IIS7 instance installed for development purposes. I don't know why but after applying SP1 RC bits hosed my IIS configuration since i was not able to change any settings because of configuration files errors in iis manager. After uninstalling iis7 and reinstalling everything was working again.

After two days with the SP1 bits here are my thoughts.

File copies are fixed now as they perform very well. This is true for disk-to-disk and disk-to-network copies. Shutdown and Startup didn't change after all but resuming from Hibernation and especially from Standby works like a charm. The machine wakes up instantly and you can log in seconds. Applications working normally, didn't experieced any problems (VisualStudio, SQL-Server, Office 2007, Adobe CS, Vmware, and few other tools just to mention some).

The disk trashing after Startup and resume from Standby/ Hibernation is decreased. Got a litte better battery performance (about 15min gain). Vista Networking is now remembering all network locations (prior to SP1 i had to change my homenetwork everytime to Home-Zone since Vista was forgetting this setting after every reboot).

Overall performance feels the same as Vista RTM. So don't expect any wonders from SP1 regarding speed and performance with the overall OS but this might change when SP1 will RTM. At least the specs for Vista will still remain high (C2D, >2GB RAM and a speedy disk). The OS is reliable and stable, didn't had any problems here but i have to admit that i hadn't any lockups or bluescreens since initial install about 1 year ago when Vista RTM'd (some problems with drivers, but when Lenovo rolled out their Vista drivers it was ok).

Sources say that everyone will be able to download Vista SP1 RC1 from the beginning of next week. But be warned this is still beta code so nothing for production environments if anyone already deployed Vista in business! Also Office 2007 SP1 will be released next week so i'm looking forward to it, also.

Freezes

We installed Service pack RC 1 Ultimate Friday on a T6oP 8742-C6U and now the system randomly hard freezes every 10 minutes to 1 hour requiring a hrad reboot. All drivers are up to date. Our video card is a GL5250 and any thoughts would be appreciated.

Is this the same RC that everyone is talking about? Looks like a public download -

It was due to go on public release about now, so I guess it is!

RC1 is a disaster for me.
Installed but then 9 out of 10 times I could not login locally as the "Group Policy Service" was not loaded.
On the rare occasion when I eventually got past the login, although my start menu, quick launch and task manager worked, the main screen froze. By scrolling my mouse over the minimized icon I could see the programs running in the background but I had no interface to them.
I waste a couple of hours experimenting until I decided to startup in safe mode and uninstall RC1. Now I can at least use my T60. I'll wait for the final release...

I'll probably just wait for the public release. It seems as if they still have some more issues to work out

Anyone know when the actual 'public release' (non-beta/final version) will be released?.....I'm hesitate to put on the edition out now.

Vista SP1 should release alongside Windows Server 2008 within the next few months, like by the end of Q1'08. (see Supersite for Windows at winsupersite.com).

I haven't had much trouble with my install of SP1 on Vista Ultimate. So, but it shouldn't cause much...it's really just a roll-up of fixes already out.
