IE doesn't connect to the internet

IE won't connect to the internet. Firefox and skype both work without any trouble. Windows Update will not connect to the internet either.

i am connecting through cable
i have windows XP on this T23

Is Windows firewall running and getting in the way? Another thing that can affect IE is that it is set for using a Proxy (which you probably aren't using). Look in the Connections part of IE Options.

no windows firewall is off. but finally after i played with connections i disabled "automatically detect settings" and everything started working.
