#1 Post by skanky » Sat Nov 20, 2004 7:12 pm

on the rare occasions when i have to shut my X21 down, i get a this program is not responding dialog box telling me that TP4_MB3HINT isnt closing down properly blah blah.

problem is i have no idea what this program is..? a google search returned nothing all too useful.

this is a clean XP install.

any help would be appreciated.

TP4-MB3HINT is the 'title' given for a small exec called TP4SERV.EXE. This latter is simply a Windows routine that looks after the trackpoint on IBM laptops. It seems it is necessary for the "scroll" button to work - which is odd to me, as I didn't know there was one on the Trackpoint.

As can be noted on the above page, this is a startup process and not a taskmanager process, so what to do about reparing it, I can only guess...

I also found this (with Google) so at least we know where it lives...

tp4serv.exe systemroot+\system32\tp4serv.exe
tp4serv.exe hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run|trackpointsrv|tp4serv.exe

You could perhaps run SFC (Start, Run (type SFC) then SCANNOW) to check and/or replace a corrupted exe - a question - have you run anything like SPYBOT or ADAWARE? I only ask as these can blitz all sorts of useful things without one realising it?!

Let us know how you get on

PS. Try this link for SFC
