intellimouse explorer hangs system after 2min. of inactivity

Intellimouse explorer hangs/freezes my Thinkpad i series window98se after approx 2 min. of inactivity. If use it constantly, works fine . If let it sit or use the trackpoint for more than 2min. without using the mouse, it hangs the system. If I gently move the intellimouse, sometimes it unfreezes the system. The longer it remains idle the harder it is to unfreeze it or for the system to recognize that the mouse has been moved. Usually have to reboot because system frozen. Is this hardware or software related? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If you can, go without the intellipoint software. I only had trouble with it, too.
I got the Bluetooth mouse, and it works well as long as no extra drivers (including the intellipoint software) are installed.
