sharing mobile broadband

#1 Post by rbi » Thu Jan 03, 2008 4:27 am

I am thinking of taking a mobile broadband plan. Vodafone is providing a free USB modem or express card 34 modem on 24 months contract. I got one R61 and T23 which doesn't have express card and USB 2.0 port. How can I share with my T23 if I am going to use R61 to house the USB 2.0 or express card for mobile broadband? Thanks a lot for that.

I don't see why you can't plug the USB version into the T23, even if it doesn't have USB2. USB1.1 is 12Mbps I believe, which I'm pretty sure is fast enough, alot faster than the mobile connection.

well Ad-HOC is the way you can (provided your T23 has Wifi). You setup your connection like normal then go to network connection and share the USB/Express 34 connection.

After that you got to the Wifi connection and chose create a network, choose peer - peer (adhoc). Setup passwods and all that. Then go on your T23 and scan and connect.

Simple as that.
Current - Thinkpad T410si - Core i3 330m, 4GB, 250GB 5400RPM, WXGA+, FPR, BT, Camera, DVDRW, Gobi2000, Win7 Pro x32
Past - Thinkpad T410 - T400 - T61 - T60 - T43 - T42 - T41 - T40 - T23 - 600X

Thanks mate. So you said I still need a wireless router to make the sharing happen, is it right?

Ad-hoc does not need a router. But you'll need to do a bit of setup on the R61 side to get it to share the connection.

OK, so if I was not wrong, first I need to set up the mobile broadband connection. Then I open the WIFI in the laptop with the mobile broadband and create a network AD-HOC. Really appreciate that.

Now I was indecisive between USB or Express 34.
