Any easy way to move from one laptop to another?

#1 Post by dwilsonfl » Mon Jan 07, 2008 2:43 pm

I have a Toshiba Satellite that I used for a year. Now I have a working T40 which is my preferred one to keep of the two. But it is a pain to reinstall everything on it and migrate all the data.

What are the ways to make that easier, or are there any?

Toshiba has a 100 gig, Ibm a 40. Could I put the 100 in there and reinstall from the IBM recovery disks and have it pick up my existing applications? I have another 60 gig HD too if that helps any.

I need to get rid of the Toshiba and move on, but I ache at the time cost involved.

Thanks for any help.

David

Make a backup of your Tosh disk, (or take an image using Acronis TrueImage).
Then download all the system-drivers, network drivers, graphics drivers and other TP programs onto the Tosh, keep them in a separate directory.
Next, uninstall the graphics drivers from the Tosh completely so that you work with plain VGA only.
Then see if the disk will start in the T40.
If you are lucky (big IF), install the IBM system drivers and reboot.
Then install the graphics drivers and see how things go.
If it works, install the rest of the drivers.
Good luck.

If that does not work, you can use the CD and DVDs (or stacks of CDs) from R&R and do a restore on the 100GB in the T40.
You'll have to manually install all programs from the Tosh and transfer all the files, either using networking or a USB stick.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
