EDIT: Issue has been resolved by Microsoft, not Lenovo. All is good for my buddy in Vista-land now. 8)

You are correct in that it is the "Full" OS and you should not have to reinstall to upgrade to Ultimate. Have you considered shipping the recovery disks to him or where is new job is? I wouldn't try to use a key if I didn't have to.

Make sure the sticker on the bottom has the right product as well, if not, make sure you get that from Lenovo as well.

I would also consider wiping the initial install anyways to clear all the preloaded crap anyways.

That said:
Microsoft lol.

mod edit: unnecessary quote snipped
I meant yea, using your Vista DVD's to install over the main(not recovery) partition and reinstall Lenovo's packages that are useful. Vista is rather easy to setup however, it is Windows and I can't imagine the recovery disks add much to that process.

I'm saying that

Is a lot of money to waste because your friend can't click Next a few times after popping in a DVD and rebooting.

TylerWylie,

I know it's hard to understand, but some people are afraid to even touch to USE a computer. It never ceases to amaze me how MANY people know NOTHING about VERY BASIC things. They are sometimes very educated and successful people. Some of them even HATE to have to work with computers, but they have no choice...lol, with very few exceptions.

TylerWylie, and all others,

I thought I was supposed to be able to put my OEM key in, as but it didn't work. The FULL KEY didn't work either...I am sick of this. I have two legitimate Vista Business keys, too, one OEM, one FULL, and they didn't work either.

I will wait until Tuesday, and if they send me the wrong edition a second time, all bets are off...This is tiring...I really wanted to work on it this weekend, which is already half over, so I guess I'll just wait at this point.

Well since you said you have the full CD then grab the systme from him and format it using the CD you have. After Vista is installed then just go and download System Update and download all the Lenovo specific things you want to be on the machine.

DONE. The way I do it is do a complete copy of the CD contents to a HD, as it installs 100x faster. I've already done the same with the Vista 64-bit CD in anticipation of installing the Core 2 Duo this week. 8) (full versions come with both 32 and 64-bit CD's).

Incidentally, can you please comment on this:

Funny, I do it the exact way you described. Get System Update. At the very least I want APS, but what else is any good/useful/important?

Thanks... 8)

well these are the things i always install:

Power Manager - takes care of the battery
Fingerprint Manager - (for machines that have it)

That's it. LOL

Most newer HDs now come with APS (well their version) built into the firmware so no need to install APS on the thinkpad also.

So ShoTT, does this mean that if you only install power manager and the fpm, you still have access to rescue and recovery correct?

well if the partition is intact you can always boot there. I don't do those R&R backups so i don't need the app installed. Actually, most of the time i usually burn the discs and format the system removing the R&R partition in the process. The only time i care about it is when selling the system.

I don't like being the spoiler here, but as I understand the process you have a major problem. Your BIOS determines what can be installed when you run R&R. From what you have stated your system IS NOT SETUP FOR Ultimate. Just basic, now if R&R is important to you, (and it is to me) your BIOS will need to be changed, and this is not the part of the BIOS that Lenovo is likely to send you disk for.

You should just be able to run rescue and recover and have a working system, what you'll experience is your system will need the serial number entered each time, and it will need to be validated. The system you ordered would not need that.

If the IBM experience is important to you or your friend, or for resale value, it would be different down the line if the system had the correct info in the BIOS. Just my two cents.

Dah, Sorry, no. The BIOS controls the access level of the R&R partition on the hard drive, ie, whether or not it is visible and reclaimable by the OS. If Lenovo sends him the Vista Ultimate R&R CDs all he has to do is wipe the R&R partition off the hard drive and tell the CDs to recreate it with the information on the new CDs. They should send a license key/sticker as well.

Personally I would just wipe the drive clean and reinstall R&R if you ever sell the notebook. It takes up to much [censored] space on our small laptop drives.
