Installing driver - .sys

#1 Post by pailhead » Sun Jan 20, 2008 10:08 pm

I've searched all over this information...I can't figure out where to place these files. It's a driver for an Adesso USB hub....3 .sys files and a .inf file.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I guess the .inf and the driver files are in the same folder. So right click on the .inf and choose "Install". The driver files will be copied to the right place (usually C:\Windows\system32\drivers or somewhere...Do a search if you want to see where they are copied)
Plug in your Adesso thingy, it should be recognized by the system.

Yeah, I tried that first...tired a few other things as well and they were all a no-go. The driver file keeps reverting to the generic Windows driver that doesn't allow the hub to run for very long.

OK then, in a "revert" like this, I'd open up Device Manager and select the hub there. Then I'd go to the Driver tab and Update Driver, Install from a list or a specific location, navigate to the folder with .inf and see what it reads from there...can you see your Adesso when the .inf file is scanned?

Have you also tried googling the serial number, part number or model name of the hub? Chances are you are not alone...I know I am not alone with my crappy USB 2.0/Firewire combo PCMCIA adapter, which is manufactured for 25+ brands and uses the same crappy OrangeWare drivers (note: a defunct company). I won't be able to get USB 2.0 speed out of this adapter so I gave up.

Look for a PCMCIA USB2.0 card that has the NEC chip set, they work natively with XP.

Yes, I tried to install in manually as well. The0 system tells me the driver (that I got from the manufacturers site) is incorrect.

Yes. I actually "acquired" this hub somehow in my travels (didn't buy it) and went straight to the manufacturers website to get the driver.

I am going through USB 2.0 card in the back of my P4 desktop system. Maybe that is the reason? The hub seems to work fine on my T61 the little bit I have used it.
