Windows Updates (Pic)

#1 Post by charredii » Wed Jan 23, 2008 11:29 pm

I'm having serious problems installing windows updates. It doesn't work through the web or automatic updates. Also, ThinkVantage system updates doesn't work either. Even time I try System Update, I am asked to install the same fixes over and over again. Windows update says it can't install Genuine advantage tool thing.

can anyone help?

Thanks

DO, you have a Genuine copy of windows? XP or Vista?

If you have.. Did you activate it? Did you activate on another computer before? Or this computer, and decided to reinstall?

"Windows update sais it can't install Genuine advantage tool"?
What does it EXACTLY say? Is it a problem during installation or does it say that your copy of windows is not Genuine?

Could it be a rights issue?

Would you mind mentioning the fixes you're trying to install via ThinkVantage System Update with the 7 character Product ID of your machine?

Alternatively, you try to install them manually.

Hello -

Does the Windows Updates web site give you a 8 digit error code (i.e., 0x<hexnumber>)? If so, what is the the error number? I didn't see an error code in your screenshot.

I'm guessing you have a corrupt datastore. See Method #4 to purge your existing datastore. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883821 . You might also need to use regsvr32 to register some of your Windows Update components.

Or it might be a permissions (or account) problem, like some of the others mentioned.

Since that's Windows problem so I've moved it to appropriate forum.

This should take care of the problem; here.

Go ahead and download it, reboot when complete. This is the hotfix for KB905474.

Take care.

Windows genuine advantage notifications is a useless update, it just nags those who have a pirated version of windows that they an illegal copy. If that is the only update that won't install, forget it. I had I similar problem with another computer (HP desktop). I used CCleaner and did a registry clean out and cleaned out all of the temp areas and WU worked again.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.
