Tweaking T60 Vista

#1 Post by Miller88 » Sat Feb 02, 2008 11:37 pm

So I finally bit the bullet and had the helpdesk put Vista on my t60 ... ended up switching back to my other hard drive because I couldn't deal with vista and it running slow.

I know there are various tweak guides out there, but what can be done with my T60 (such as lennovo services) that can be tweaked to give me speeds like I was getting in XP?
Past: T60 , XPS M1330, Inspiron 1420 & 1520, Presario V2010US
Present: T61 , Acer D150, T61 7663 (Parents)
Screen swapped between the 7661 and 7663

As with XP you can go into Performance Settings set the machine to run in "adjust for best performance" rather than "appearance" or "Let windows decide"

Also, make sure you run your system in Classic mode, rather than the overly busy looking Aero or Vista themes.

Sure, it's a simpler look but faster to work with.

If you use a 3rd party defragger, disable the Vista defragger that runs automatically.

Run Windows Explorer in Classic mode, too.

There are some services that can be disabled, check around the 'net for some articles about that.

Vista will never run as fast as XP, but it can be satisfactorily quick with proper tuning.

I have two T60s and they each have separate hard drives for Vista. They're pretty quick, but XP is still quicker.

Thanks for the response. I'll have to boot into vista later today and give everything a shot.

As for the HD accessing, that's the defragger? I tried disabling the indexing but that didn't work for me.

The defragger does not run all the time. It runs on a schedule. The user can just uncheck the scheduler in the defragger menu to disable it. Just make sure you remember to defrag on your own, or have a 3rd party defragger. Defragging will help the machine to run faster.

The indexer is "hard wired" into Vista. But you can uncheck the places that it indexes. (only certain documents can be chosen to index, for example) After every re-boot the indexer will run and re-scan three times for some amazing reason. It will stop after a few minutes. You can always just use hibernate instead of shut down. The indexer will not re-scan when coming out of hibernate.

Also give a try to the tips mentioned in following thread:

Windows Vista Performance tips.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

RAM! You need an additional GB of RAM. I wouldn't run Vista with anything less than 2GB of RAM.

No, its just a service and so can be disabled. A few minutes on Google will yield multiple desciptions on how to disable the relevant service.

Cheers,

I ordered a 2gb chip last week for a total of 2.5 in it. Currently, I'm running XP and 2 instances of Server 2003 in VPC for a class ... on a different hard drive from vista.

I got into an option where I can disable indexing for certain file types. Since I don't use the indexing service (or would rather wait for search to search), I can uncheck them all right?

Nice going with the 2GB chip. 2.5GB will work great. And yes, I also do not need indexing, and have therefore disabled it. I have never needed indexing on any OS. It is only in the way of getting my Thinkpad to run as fast as possible. ;)
