still getting the error...
It appears that I was too quick to say the problem has been fixed. I am now getting the same error even after updating the drivers...

What is your thinkpad's model? sounds possibly like an X-series ...chait wrote:It appears that I was too quick to say the problem has been fixed. I am now getting the same error even after updating the drivers...

I suggest you borrow a USB mouse from someone and connect it to your X61s, then go to Control panel in Windows and uninstall the trackpoint drivers, after restarting your machine run a good registry cleaner.
Then download the following package:
TrackPoint Driver for Windows Vista 32-bit, XP - ThinkPad.
Unpack the drivers (default location would be C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TRACKPT.V32\SETUP.EXE), go there and run the setup.
Enlighten us with your results.

update...
Nevr mind, I figured this myself from .[/http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/w ... 025787.htm]. And I did not see a difference in senstivity. I did chang the power setting from max bat to mid-way for better performance. Whatever that means.

Now, of course, I am not experiencing the problem. The next time it happens I will follow your instructions and report back.
Thank you very much.

an update..
OK, the problem re-appeared. I used Control Paenl|Add or Remove Programs| to remove TP TrackPoint Driver…went smoothly and I was asked to reboot. I am not that familiar with the inner working of the registry and did not know which program I can use to clean it, so this step was not done. The interesting part was that after the uninstall I was still able to use the red nipple. Same after re-boot. SO I was not sure what actually happened. Anyhow, I downloaded the driver and installed as you described. The installation took a fraction of a second, I was amazed. Usually you see a window opened with progress etc, not this time. I re-booted, but the next time I shutdown I got the same problem with the TP4 driver.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks again.

You don't need the IBM drivers for the lil' button, Windows will handle that just fine.
I think the same is true for the pad as well, but I don't remember.
Sorry I can't offer more.

Use CCleaner (a freeware).chait wrote:snip....I am not that familiar with the inner working of the registry and did not know which program I can use to clean it, so this step was not done....
Please make sure you followed the installation instructions and ran two setups to install the drivers.chait wrote:snip...The installation took a fraction of a second, I was amazed. Usually you see a window opened with progress etc, not this time...snip

more clues?
So I am still getting this "TP4_MB3HINT isn't closing down properly" almost each time. I cleaned the registry using CCleaner, unintalled , then re-intalled the driver. Still the same problem.
here's a clue that may help you diagnose the problem. in control panle, when i click on Mouse, nothing happens. however, when I try to shut down (or put in Sleep mode etc), i get the above error message. once i clear the message, the mouse winodw shows up, but then goes away as the system is proceeding with its shut down.
any ideas? thanks in advance. -yc

Download HijackThis, create a log file and pm it to me.
Then uninstall Trackpoint drivers, go to Windows update, look under optional updates, if it offers trackpoint drivers then install them, otherwise current Windows drivers will be enough to drive your pointing stick.

Chait, software wise I didn't find any problem with your thinkpad but restoring to factory image after backing up your important data can help eliminate this issue.
Another possible solution can be to revert back to factory drivers, you would find them under: C:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERS\TRACKPT\SETUP .
Also, make sure that most recent BIOS, device drivers and Windows updates have been applied to your system.
In addition, I would advise you to run PC-Doctor's diagnostic test on your keyboard and trackpoint, although very unlikely nevertheless this can be hardware issue too.
The only time I saw this issue showing up on X-series was when bad set of trackpoint drivers were released by lenovo sometime last year however the problem was promptly corrected with the release of new set of drivers (v4.63).
You may also try UPHClean as previously mentioned by another poster.
Let us know if the problem persists.

OK guys, i've had same problem and after countless restarts found out that one of services is making the problem. it was one of track point drivers.
Fixed it by downloading latest driver for track point 4.63 in my case.
Run the downloaded file and it has extracted files to folder c:\drivers\WIN\TRACKPT.V32\
Then in this folder i run a file tp4unins.exe
Done restart and from that moment i don't have a problem.
Try this, hope it will work for you too.

I have followed your several pointers, from using CCleaner to an uninstall of the Trackpoint drivers. I am presently using XP's built-in drivers and since that time I no longer have problems. Everything seem ok. Thanks for your personal attention to my problem!
BTW: I am using Start Inspector for Windows to trip down the list of programs loaded at startup. So far I really like it.
