problems with installing xp

#1 Post by kds000 » Wed Feb 20, 2008 3:26 pm

i recently bought a t42 used with no hd from ebay a few weeks ago and recently tried installing a fresh copy of xp on the laptop. Setup goes fine until the registering components phase of the setup. It freezes at that stage with about 12 minutes left no matter what. Does anyone know why it does that? i'm currently running windows 2000 on it with no problems but i'd much rather prefer to have xp on it.

Welcome to the forum!

Do you know if the hard drive is in good health and its not hitting a bad sector?

Secondly, Update the BIOS on the T42 and see if it helps. Its possible XP is unable to register a hardware component and is hanging. If I recall correctly, I have heard of AGP driver getting stuck at times.

What circa is the Windows XP install CD?

I hope this helps.

thanks for the welcome..the hd on the laptop is good, it ran hd checks with no probs. I updated the bios to the latest 3.23 bios and it didn't help with the hanging at registering components stage. The disc is an extra sp2 oem disc i recieved as part of a system bundle a few years ago.

I have no direct experience with a T42, but this may (or may not) help:

I've had problems before with a bad MiniPCI card causing power on issues, as well as Windows XP install hangs. That user seemed to have a similar thing with an A22m.

try getting some t42 recovery CD's, might be easier than doing all that troubleshooting, what's your model number I might be able to help with that.

I think there is a version of PC Doctor that can be downloaded as an iso image? This can be booted without having an OS installed on the machine and should verify all the hardware.

That may be a good place to start as this does seem to be a hardware issue.

Windows XP will not install properly if it detects a "confusing" hardware problem, it will hang and not report what the problem is.

Try booting a good Linux live CD (PCLOS, Ubutu etc) and see what happens.

Go and make sure everything in the BIOS in enabled and is on the correct settings. It look like the install is hanging on the hardware configuration part of the install. If after configuring the BIOS, the install still won't finish, then I would make sure the install disk is working properly. Put in an old junker hard drive into a good computer and run the install to see if it will install. If you get the same result there, then you have a bad install disk. Good Luck!

i've run the pc doctor test cd, it passed with no probs. I also tried booting ubuntu and it worked perfectly. i have also tried removing the mini pci wireless card then installing xp but it still freezes at registering components. Im really confused as to why it will not let me install xp yet windows 2k installs with no probs. I might try to get the recovery cds and try using those
