I just installed iTunes 7.6 (latest version) and received the strangest error when the installation finished. The message was "Cannot create or modify the directory 'iTunes'. It is usually in the "My Music" directory." and iTunes ouldn't run. But I have administrator rights and, even when I manually created the subdirectory in My Music, the error keeps occurring.
Has anyone experienced anything similar? I've installed iTunes on 4 other computers (all XP home) without ever seeing this problem and no other program installed on this Thinkpad has given me the same error.
Can't install iTunes 7.6 on T61 XP Pro
It turns out that, for some unknown reason, Windows no longer recognized the "My Music" folder as a "special folder" and iTunes looks for the mapping of "My Music" to a specific folder, rather than to the folder itself. I looked in the registry for Special Folders and found 1 reference to "My Music", changed it to the specific directory, and made certain that all other "My Music" references had the correct directory value. iTunes then worked fine.
