"automatic location switching" problem in AC v4.42

#1 Post by skanky » Mon Feb 25, 2008 2:58 am

i have 3 profiles set up in AC, one for wired, one for wireless at home, one for wireless at work and want the wired connection to always be used if its available whether i'm at home or at work and the wireless to be backups.

i'm using a T60 and AC 4.42 for vista (so it says in the help/about screen) and i've noticed that if i goto configure then location switching, i am able to move the two wireless connections around, but the wired connection always stays at the bottom which i dont want as i want wired to have priority if its available.

now on a XP machine (T42) with AC 4.42 for 2000/xp, i do the same thing but this time wired has a priority and as such i am able to move that to the top.

any idea whats going on with the vista install of AC 4.42? both are configured the same as far as i can see, both have "enable automatic location switching" enabled and both are including ethernet ports in auto switching and note on the vista screenshot below, the ethernet entry doesnt have a number = cant move it.

xp AC:

edit: on the T60, i've set the network card to 100mb/full instead of autodetect, the T42 is on autodetect.

how important is IPv6? as i've noticed the T42 doesnt have that but its enabled on the T60.

i think the above problem is in some way related to the problem reported by another user here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=57187

If you set up both both your home and work profiles with...
  • Type of network connection set to "Best Available Network"

Chose the network adapter you want to use at this location showing ticks for both wired and wirless adapters
...you can have the profile automatically switch between wired and wireless connections at each location.

That way you only need two profiles and location switching will take care of which profile is active.

Cheers,

thats fair enough, but it still doesnt explain why i cant move the wired connection to the top on the vista machine but can on the XP machine.
