hello
I own a t42p ThinkPad and since 2 weeks, a new T61p.
Xp is installed in T42p
Vista intregral with my new machine T61p
I am not a gamer user, I use these computers for business, internet (firefox) and windows office.
I am surprise that my new T61p (2.5Ghz, 2M RAM) has very bad performance. It takes about 120 seconds to turn off computer .
I up-to-date drivers, bios, run PC doctor, .. but I didn’t not succeed to solve the problem. I am going to call the warranties hot line but before, I would like to have your opinion : is it normal that vista takes a long time to turn off ?
Thank you in advance for you help, Philippe

I find that if my notebook is connected to and external hard drive thatmy shutdown time takes a lot longer than if I do not have an external hard drive attached.
Also, I came by this today. I hope it helps.

That article gives some good ideas for speeding up Vista.
Also, when a Vista installation is new, it takes some time for the OS to optimize itself. For example, until it completely indexes your hard drive(s) there will be a lot of background disk access. Also, there is something called "superfetch" which takes time to learn what programs you use and may make things seems slower at first but results in more speed later.
Also, VERY IMPORTANTLY, it is not necessary or desirable to "shut down" Vista every time you turn it off. You should set it up to "sleep," (what used to be called "standby") when you turn it off or close the lid, at least when plugged in. (Can be done in Power Options, see below.) Putting the machine to sleep and resuming from sleep should be very fast.
Make sure you have "hybrid sleep" disabled. See Vista help for more on that.
You can also fine tune how aggressively Vista indexes your drive(s), customize when and how often Windows Defender runs scans, and when the built in defragmenter runs. See Vista's help for more specific info on these features.
Also it's a good idea to check under control panel, power options, pick and select a plan that looks good for you to use and click on your selected plan, change plan settings, change advanced power settings, and check all the settings there to make sure you have all the options configured optimally for your purposes. Just for one example, by default, the wireless adapter is not set to maximum performance in many power plans. You might want to change that.
Also, if you search on "tweak vista" or "tweaking vista," I'm sure you will find lots of suggestions on how to make vista run faster.
Finally, SP1 for vista is out and available if you search around on how to get it installed or you can wait for a few more weeks and it will be automatically made available via windows update. SP1 brings many improvements/optimizations to Vista.

Thank you very much cpascu01 & pae77
I solve the problem calling Lenovo/IBM hot line warranty.
They make me use the soft drive fitness test to test the hard drive and it was ok.
After, they told me that I should reinstall the OS Windows vista. Maybe something was not correctly install the first time: it’s strange because I just installed ms office on this computer !!
To reinstall the system, the person said to me to use personalized installation and I do not selected the Norton security soft.
Now it works. To shutdown the computer It takes about 30 seconds (120 seconds before to turn off computer)
Regards, Philippe
