How to get rid of SP2 paranoid security settings

#1 Post by Elhabash » Fri Dec 03, 2004 7:09 am

Well, the paranoid security settings after installing SP2 might be good for Microsofts image, but for the user they are a pain in the [censored]. I am talking about opening a help file and then having to activate ActiveX controls every time, or trying to start a program, for instance IBM drivers, and having to tell each time that yes, I really, really want to open that file and yes, I know what I am doing.

So my question is: How can I get rid of this stuff, set it to the status like it was before SP2? I protect myself with different means, but also don't want to disable all the protections (besides, this doesn't help really anyways).

I know about Internet settings, but didn't find the correct settings yet. What are other people doing about this?

Either dump IE for another browser or take a look at IE's settings/options.

what do you mean by dump IE? I think elhabash might be referring to the annoying "Security Center" of SP2...i know for me, I keep getting lame alerts about zonealarm's antivirus program being switched off, even though I manually turned it off in favor of norton antivirus (corporate client). I have set Windows to stop monitoring antivirus status, but, at every restart, the Security Center seems to never keep this setting, and, what do you know...antivirus alert again! Holy crap. I thought it was neat to getting SP2 preinstalled on my recently-purchased 2373KXU, but I didnt expect such nags. Any help? Thanks!

IMO, the problem he speaks of is related to IE.

However, the problem you speak of is related to the Security Center of XP, again, IMO. So go to Run and type services.msc scroll down to Security Center and double click it, then change the Startup type to Disabled...that's what I did and it put an end to that annoying message.

activeX -- gives IE away  It's late, I got sleep to catch up on. Thx selvan for the tips regarding security ctr...its kinda annoying though how the security center doesnt even remember user settings!
