Vista frequently locks up/hang on T61p

#1 Post by mrsachemtiger » Fri Mar 21, 2008 8:39 am

My T61p came about a week ago, with Vista Business, 160g hd, 3 gb ram.

I'm looking for ideas to solve what seems to be a random crash/lock up/hang problem. The only way to get out of it is a hard power down and reboot with the power button. I haven't kept track of every crash, but here are some of the situations:

It happened in the middle of composing an email in Outlook.

It happened when I was looking at the event error logs to see if I could figure out a pattern for the behavior.

It happened when I was deleting a folder.

It happened when I was trying to use WET.

It has happened when I clicked a link in IE.

It has happened more than once when I was dragging to resize toolbars in the taskbar.

When it locks up the circle is going round and round, but never stops, and the title bar for whatever program I'm using at the time says "not responding." Then I can't get to task manager to end anything. Even if task manager is running when it hangs, I can't switch to it.

I installed SP1 yesterday, hoping that would solve it, but it didn't. I uninstalled the Norton Internet Security and switched to AVG free, hoping that might help. I also used the Norton Removal Tool to clean up the strays.

I've disabled a few start-up things in msconfig -- Adobe Acrobat, First Run Offers Launcher, Bluetooth Software and “On Screen Display" (Lenovo Group – Program Files\Lenovo\hotkey\tposdsvc).

After powering down, I let it restart Windows normally, rather than safe mode, because I don't know how that would help.

I haven't called lenovo yet for service -- but I could. I learn a lot more by doing my own troubleshooting. :)

I really want to like Vista, but so far, I can't use it to do any work if it's going to keep locking up. I haven't tried switching back to classic mode yet, but perhaps I should.

Suggestions???? Thanks much!

I've run CleanUp! a few times, and it's crashing much less frequently. I've also installed and run Spybot.

However ... CleanUp seems to also remove some Office 2007 configuration. Haven't figured that one out yet, but I'm really happy Vista has only locked up once today ... so far! 8)

It is really difficult to track down the issue or program which is causing the lockups unless you can provide some informations from event log.

If you continue to have that lockups i would suggest to try a factory reinstall without all 3rd party apps like norton, office, and so on. Use Baseline Software Administrator http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ADMIN#TBSA to stripe down your factory preload.

Event logs

#4 Post by mrsachemtiger » Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:27 pm

It just crashed again when I was composing an email in Outlook. I could tell it was going to lock up, so I tried to switch to task manager, and the screen went to black. Here's the event logs from yesterday and today ... what they mean is beyond me. I apologize in advance if it's inappropriate to post something this long ... When I follow the link in the "Event Log Online" in the bottom half of the window for each error/warning, it's over my head. In just 10 days, I've got a total of 2500 Administrative Events! That sounds like a lot to me, but maybe it's normal.

Yeah you might try to test your memory with your Vista DVD. Just insert it and when booting select to boot from cd and then go to Memory Diagnostics or just select Memory Diagnostic Tool in Start Menu.

The event id 7031 normally indicates that a specified service terminated ungracefully. When reading your follwing errors maybe it's related to the TPM device. Have you checked that you got the latest drivers installed?

If it doesn't help just contact Lenovo support. Maybe it's related to a hardware failure.

What Vista DVD?

I have a baggie with 6 "Product Recovery CDs", 1 "Rescue and Recovery CD", and 1 "Supplemental Product Recovery CD".

Do I need to call and beg them for one? I didn't see that option when I was ordering.

It's not locking up as often, but it's still happening at random times.

I ran the memory test with PC Doctor, and it said it was fine. Is the Vista DVD memory test more thorough?

Thanks again for any suggestions.

You don't really need the Vista DVD. You can run MDSCHED.EXE to schedule a system diagnostic at the next boot. Alternatively, pressing F8 at boot up should let you access the memory test tool.

I'm having the same lockups I think.

Also Vista Business, on a T61. Unfortunately they sent me a norwegian Vista :( so I cannot compare error messages directly nor google them. :(

In the event log:
I get "tjenesten TVT Backup Service" a lot

and I get several that roughly translates into "realtime backup file damaged because of bad shutdown".

and "parrallell port driver could not start". But I do not have this port...

and more than 10 just today of - translating to "Found an error on the device \Device\CdRom0 during a page swap operation.". But I do not use the DVD drive today.

Better post this now before it locks up again

Hard drive replaced

#10 Post by mrsachemtiger » Sun Aug 17, 2008 9:33 pm

Update/Good News:

In late July I gave up trying to trouble-shoot why my computer kept locking up/hanging/crashing, and decided to call lenovo. Of course, when it was working, it would pass all the pc doctor tests. Fortunately, they were willing to try replacing the hard drive, and EUREKA! My computer is finally working! No hangs/lockups since the new drive was installed in late July. Apparently it was a bad drive to begin with.

My experience with tech support was so-so; one person actually hung up on me, because he decided to blame it on a software issue, which my warranty doesn't cover. The next person was at least kind enough to stay on the phone with me and suggest that of course, my computer passed all the diagnostic tests when it was working, and it wasn't possible to run them when it wasn't -- so, he was at least willing to authorize a replacement of the hard drive, which ultimately solved the problem. What a relief!

Glad everything worked out for you. I've almost always had great service from the CSR's in Atlanta, but their service depots are beyond atrocious. Refusing to repair machines, losing machines, screws, hard drives, memory, bezels.....the list goes on and on, it's ridiculous.

re hard drive

#12 Post by xaviler » Wed Sep 17, 2008 3:34 am

My t61 7663 with a 120gig hard drive also makes me crazy ! first problems appreared, when i had a FAT 32 partition on it :
it showed hard disk error and much broken sectors.
after a call on lenovo, there was a hard disk replacement.

now 3 weeks later i have a new problem :

bluescreens with Vista show differents error like win32k.sys , apci problems ...

a call on lenovo service hotline told me to reformat the hard drive because of software issues and a not supported software error.

now yesterday i reformated the hard drive , like they told me to with pc dotor , i took almost 4 hours.

test and diagnostics run successfully with pc doctor boot disk.

so i began to reinstall with recovery lenovo disc . after 2 more hours , BANG another bluescreen during install. ( again win32k.sys , page fault ) .

Now i will call them another time ( 4third time repair in one year )... hope the finally can fix this.

i like my t61, but with those errors and handups , it is a not relieable device, which is pretty sad combinded with the high price of quality hardware. anyone any other experience like mine ?
