How to enable autoplay for USB drives in windows 2000?
I know that autoplay is by default disabled in windows 2000 ... I know how to turn it on for CD-ROM drives using the group policy editor, but am clueless as how to get the autoplay for USB drives (flash/external HDD). Is this feature availble in W2K at all? If so, please let me know how.

I think just like the cd-rom autorun you need something(or some autorun script) on the drive to make it autorun. Here is what I found(since I was curious and wondered if it can possibly be done by editing the group policy):

What I am looking for is to set the default autoplay "mode" to "Browse the drive content in File Explorer" on all the USB drives including HDD, flash drives, and ODDs.
You probably already knew about enabling autoplay in group policy so the link below is only for my own reference:

And the link below has info on how to DISABLE autorun on USB drives. It might help if you want to enable it.

Here is a link from Microsoft about USB drive autorun, it doesn't seem like all the USB drives are treated the same way(there are two major groups: "fixed" and "removeable")

Sorry I don't have any direct answer to your question but just by searching online and getting all the info is time worthy.

Sri,
Have you tried downloading Tweak UI? I know that there's an entry in the XP version for controlling Autorun; there may be a similar one for 2K.

Nah, tweakUI does not have it ... I checked already. It has autorun settings for dvd/cd but nothing whatsoever for USBrkawakami wrote: Have you tried downloading Tweak UI? I know that there's an entry in the XP version for controlling Autorun; there may be a similar one for 2K.i

I checked my M$ W2K Expert Companion, but there's nothing in there about that subject.
Without an autorun.inf file, there seems to be no go.
Try putting one on that USB disk and see if it works.
Alternatively, install XP

I've used autorun.inf on my memory cards and such for a long time, if only to display a default (custom) icon. Success with the OPEN= command varies.
Code: Select all
[autorun]
ICON = autorun\korova.ico
open = explorer.exe
