How to replace dll in system folder?

#1 Post by ostarbuck » Wed Dec 08, 2004 1:03 pm

I'm trying to replace usp10.dll which resides in my system32 folder, but I can't figure out how to do it. Any suggestions? I'm running XP Pro SP 2 on a thinkpad x40.

(This dll is supposed to handle processing of complex scripts. I seem to have an old one, which may be responsible for problems I'm having with hebrew text in some applications. I'm trying to replace it with the newer version of the dll that came with Office 2003.)

Hi,

Thanks for pointing me to this link, but unfortunately, this is exactly the problem: I've seen these instructions but I can't figure out how to follow them on my X40. You'll notice that the Microsoft instructions on how to boot to the Recovery Console start with:
Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Of course I don't have a Windows XP startup disk or Windows XP CD-ROM, since I have an X40.

I tried creating recovery disks and booting to the IBM Rescue and Recovery workspace, but it doesn't seem to have the same functionality as the "Recovery console" described in these instructions. I couldn't find a command-line or a way to copy or move individual files.

What am I missing?

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/howto-12.html
While running Windows XP, insert your Windows XP CD in the drive, and click Exit when the installation options are displayed
(You can skip this if you already have the \i386 directory on your hard drive)
Select Start > Run and in the Open box type: {X}:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
Where {X} should be the driver letter of your CD drive.
If the i386 directory is already installed on your computer, you can just type the path to it, for example C:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons
Follow the instructions to install the Recovery Console, when the installation is complete, restart your computer
The Recovery Console will show up in the list of available operating systems in the boot menu. to use the Recovery Console, you need administrator privileges
The i386 folder is already on the HDD of your X40.

Thank you! I didn't realize that. Now I am using the correct dll and everything is hunky-dory.
