Windows Vista problem

#1 Post by Trekk69 » Fri Apr 11, 2008 1:07 pm

So, heres my problem....
I just came back from a month vacation sadly away from my X61T, and had a slew of updates to install when I got back.
Went ahead and did that, and than as my system was restarting, "during do not turn off your computer, installing updates", I hit my power cord by accident, and because I don't keep my battery in, turn off my computer.

Well, it would restart, but never get past the 'installing phase' on startup.
So I hit the thinkvantage button and restored my windows files, so I could keep my applications and hard drive state (because I haven't done a recent backup).
Now, basically all my windows applications are not wanting to work properly...I'm trying to use windows update and it will work, but than just stay that way for a long time, forcing me to open task manager and manually exit it.
All my other applications will work properly (i.e. Firefox or Onenote), just not windows, even deleting files will not work sometimes.

So just wondering what I should do, because it seems that I can't get any Windows updates to work to try to get my system back up to working, or should I just try the process again?
Any help is appreciated!

if i was in your shoe, backup all files and reinstall.

the time you will be wasted trying to get the thing up and running will probably exceed the 2.5 hours needed to have a fresh install.

and if you will be doing that you might as well downgrade to xp 64. i am using vista 64 enterprise now and i fail to see any reason why i should use this instead of xp 64. sure directx 10 is good for gaming but i doubt you using your x as a gaming lappy.

Windows XP Tablet Edition is not available for the x64 architecture. Furthermore, Vista's tablet functionality is leaps and bounds better than Windows 2005 Tablet Edition (aka XP SP2). As someone who has been using a tablet pc since 2004, my advice is to stick with Vista. Downgrading from Vista to XP is a great leap backwards for tablet pc's.

Try performing a System Restore to a time before you tried installing the updates. That might be of some help, but i'm not really sure. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions.
I will look into when I did a last restore, or just stick it out for now, hopefully it doesn't become unbearable!
Will do a full reinstall once the summer hits, and I'm done school though, so hopefully I can just wait.

XP was the first version of OS that supported tablet computing. As with any new technology, it takes time to mature.

Vista's implementation of tablet input panel (TIP) is far less intrusive than XP's. XP's docked TIP changes desktop size, and consequently window sizes. XP's floating TIP does not work consistently in Firefox, etc. Vista's TIP works like XP's floating tip, but does not disappear when the stylus is removed from the vicinity of the digitizer.

Vista also supports more gestures and flicks, which I use a lot. Flicks makes scrolling and copy/pasting much easier. Snipping tool also evolved a lot from the crash-prone powertoy for XP to a reliable system utility.

There are other improvements under the hood. Improved handwriting recognition and learning are not immediately perceivable, but the lower error rate contributes to a better overall user experience.
