Is there a way to disable the green volume status that's displayed at the bottom of the screen whenever the speaker volume is adjusted?
On my T61p (Vista x64), it seems to appear not just when master volume is adjusted, but when a new app makes a sound for the first time. For example -- open Microsoft Outlook, new mail hits the Inbox, it dings -- volume is displayed. Go to apple.com/trailers, start a trailer -- volume is displayed.
Yes, it's really #$$%@! annoying. I'd like to just turn it off, but I don't know how.

I don't have that problem with my z61m. The problem itself seems kind of fishy. Maybe you could try uninstalling On Screen Display and then reinstalling it. If that doesn't work, maybe try to see if it's some sort of Accessibility function.

It doesn't seem fishy to me -- if you open the Windows Volume Mixer, what it's doing makes a certain amount of crazy sense. Every new application that makes a sound in Vista gets its own volume slider bar. The On Screen Display is registering a volume change whenever one of these slider bars gets changed -- and creating a new slider bar counts as a change.
I found what I was looking for on my own: Display Settings / Advanced - On Screen Display tab, uncheck "On-screen display" and all the annoying green stuff is banished forever.
