Hazard: Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2

#1 Post by Dabard051 » Fri Apr 18, 2008 12:09 pm

If contemplating update with Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2, be aware:

There is a problem with Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2 (build 3311, and others) prior to Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate 2 Refresh ("XP SP3 RC2R", build 5508). This problem is supposed to be fixed in the "Refresh" edition.

I encountered this error myself after downloading and installing the not-quite-latest version directly from the Microsoft web site.

IF you install XP SP3 Release Candidate 2, upon the next system reboot may encounter an error in which the boot process loops endlessly, with the message

"STOP: c0000139 {Entry Point Not Found}
The procedure entry point GdiGetBitmapBitSize could not be located in the dynamic link library GDI32.dll"

or

"Stop c0000139 The procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_24 could not be located in the daynamic link library Kernel32.dll"

displayed with Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)...

There is no way to boot to safe mode or any other recovery state from just the hard drive.

The solution requires that you have a BOOTABLE Windows XP CD or other bootable medium which allows access to the XP file system on the hard drive.

After you have gotten access to your XP hard drive (by whatever means) the procedure is to then

(assuming a DOS command line prompt)

RENAME C:\Windows\system32\GDI32.DLL GDI32.old

then

COPY C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\GDI32.dll C:\Windows\System32\GDI32.dll

(if C: is not the boot drive then replace C: with the letter of the boot drive)

Thanks to www.tipsandtricks.com for the solution, saved my bacon for sure.

The XP SP3 RTM is reportedly going into distribution in the next few days, so its a moot point now.
